Granholm and GOP rival DeVos on same stage Friday in Detroit

Gov. Jennifer Granholm and her Republican rival Grand Rapids businessman Dick DeVos will be on the same stage for the first time Friday at a National Town Hall meeting in Detroit.

They will talk about their stands on issues and take questions from journalists and an audience expected to exceed 500 people.

But it won't be a formal debate.

The Granholm and DeVos campaigns havent agreed on a timetable for even starting talks on how and how often the two major party candidates should debate before the election in November.

Friday's event is part of the 2006 Freedom Weekend at Cobo Hall. Rev. Wendell Anthony, founder of the Freedom Institute sponsoring Freedom Weekend, called the forum an opportunity for for voters to learn where each candidate stands on the important issues.

Granholm campaign spokesman Chris DeWitt said the governor accepted an invitation to appear at the 2-hour event and will be happy to take questions. But he said he wasnt sure what the format will be or whether the candidates will engage in any give and take.

DeWitt said he wasn't even sure Granholm and DeVos will be on the stage at the same time.

Carmen Carter at Freedom Institute says they will be. Along with two radio show hosts Lloyd Jackson of WJR 760 AM and Frankie Darcel WMXD 92.3 FM, who will handle the questioning.
