I'll soon be working downtown and I was wondering where is the best parking? A friend had said the Opera House was the least expensive. Any advice??

Depends on the time of day and what is going on downtown. Most of the time the Greektown casino garage is free if you are 21 and can get it validated inside the casino.

In what building will you be working? I imagine that you want to park within a reasonable walking distance or a combination of reasonable parking price and DPM cost to get around if parking far from the office.

When I worked downtown in the financial district through 1998, I parked mostly on Cobo Roof, which always seemed reasonably priced and was within walking distance of the Penobscot Bldg.

I'll be working in the 1st Natl. building. I called Crains Detroit Business with the same question. They said they printed an article in March listing Opera House as the lowest priced at $50 a month. Is it?

I just bought a spot at the Opera garage. It was a $25 deposit and $50 a month. No contract, month to month type deal.

Great deal IMO. The attendent told me they had very few spots left to lease.

Your employer might have a deal with surrounding garages as well..... I am pretty sure that some 1st National businesses have spots at Compuware...what company are you working for?

JLA used to be $50 as well, with a shuttle that stops at various stops

Don't miss that parking hassle at all. Except for the airport, there ain't a place in Las Vegas that doesn't have free parking.

There's a thing called a bus. Get you there without spending any money for gas, allows you to catch up on reading, and drops you off on the same block as your building.

When I go downtown, I park in Dearborn for free and then use SMART. It costs $3. which is cheaper then parking. The SMART buses on Michigan Ave run
on time, frequently and are clean and safe. Please see my website at http://www.savethefueltax.org

I hope we don't make this an automobile vs. bus issue...again. The person asked what would be the best parking deal, not to be lectured on driving an automobile.

If you are not using mass transit, don't bitch about the lack of it.
$3.00 to and from vs. $3.00 a gallon to get you how many miles plus paying for parking?

detroit's lame, inefficient, unreliable attempt at "mass transit" as you call it, or a simple bus sytem can be MUCH more of a hassle than parking downtown... We have a new office worker downtown looking for convenient parking...Didnt ask about a bus.

$3 to drive to and park in Dearborn then take a bus downtown vs. $5 to park downtown? Am I missing something here?

Restore, the actual cost of driving your vehicles from Dearborn to Downtown and back is about an additional $5 when you factor in depreciation, wear and tear, oil changes. Add $5 to that for parking downtown, and the total is ten. so its ten vs three. Thats a significant savings.

No lecturing from me, I just recommended an alternative.

May I refer to this thread when I read people bitching about the next parking garage being built or a "suburban" style strip mall being built on Jefferson?

Thanks everyone. Got my Opera House Parking pass today for $50 + a deposit. It's a nice clean and well lit garage, they also have 24 hour security. Has anyone heard of anything going into their retail? A Starbucks would be awesome after going to the YMCA across the street.

Wait, you guys want people to spend money in the city, but then you frown upon them driving their car downtown so they can pay to park their car there?
