Does anyone know if this ever got off the ground? What is the status of it?

I haven't looked, but it is probably on the wish list for the current capital campaign they are doing.

Yes, it is.

"The capital campaign will help meet Wayne State University’s major needs for new construction, including new homes for the School of Business and the Honors College, an athletics arena, an Engineering Development Center, a Performing Arts Building and a Computer Science and Informational Technology Building, among others. Funds raised also will be used to improve existing structures and upgrade classroom, laboratory and office spaces."

Wayne needs something unifying for the student body...D1 hockey would be great.

Wayne has a D1 hockey program (they recruited me). The problem is that there is not much community interest in the team, outside of the student body.

hmmm, is hockey DI but everything else DII? They did play a non-conference game against UM this year, didn't they?

In any case, they really need a home venue ON campus.

Yeah, men's and women's hockey is both D1. Part of the pitch Coach Wilkenson made in recruiting me was that there would be an on campus arena before I graduuated. Well, I'm graduating in my 5th year in spring of '07 (at MSU) and there is still no arena.

At the time, I guess a group of rich alumni was considering making a huge financial contribution for the arena. I dont know where this ever went.

Has anyone ever used their gym? I'm presuming the gutting of the swimming pool in August is going is going to come out of this capital campaign.

Swimming pool? You mean the one in the new fitness center, or some other competition one? I would be shocked if they got rid of a new pool.

I actually treated my family to that pool a couple times when I attended Wayne.

Mackinaw, the girl at the front desk confirmed that the swimming pool was being gutted in August as it only gets 10-15 visitors a day. It's in a modern building which I presume is the new fitness center. It has a strange layout and seems more suited to little kids than adults, which I found strange. They're going to double the size of the gym in its place, apparently.

I see, Mrjoshua, and I'll take your word. If it was inefficient (and yes it certainly wasn't a lane pool--more of something you'd see at a resort), then I'm glad they're pulling the trigger on this.

If these two stadiums get built, we could have more venues for an Olympic Games. I think Detroit should bid because of all the great venues. Detroit has come so far and WSU seems like they are leading the way in Midtown.

Less than 10 people a day used the pool. Makes sense to get rid of it and fill it with treadmills/free weights. From today's meeting.

Why not build an arena that can accommodate both hockey and basketball? Isn't the United Center in Chicago used for the Bulls and the Blackhawks? Building an arena that can accommodate more than one sport is more efficient than building two.

Royce, that would be smart if it was a varsity only building such as Value City Arena (Ohio State) or Kohl Center ( U of Wisconsin), however this arena would be used by several organizations, and the time it takes to convert to/from an ice rink would take away from the feasibility of including many more uses to the arena.

Sounds like a good reuse of Tiger Stadium
