... its so awsome to actually see something that was talked about and such a lofty goal... become a reality in the city of Detroit... Maybe this is the model of the future??? the project that broke the logjam and made projects not only lofty but viable? Maybe this will forshadow the book cadillac... |

Finally, something is being done with this "prime real estate." The riverfront is an essential piece to the redevelopment of Detroit; just as the harbor front is in Baltimore. That is a terrific place to hangout, with many top-notch national restaurants such as Cheesecake Factory and ESPN Zone. Now when they make commitment to the Riverfront, I'll know we have arrived. (Just joking, although it would be nice to have a Cheesecake Factory in Detroit) |

This is exciting... this looks to be the year that the biggest chunk of the riverwalk gets finished. One thing that's not clear from the article or map, though... the article states that "another 2 miles of the Riverwalk will be built". How far will that be exactly? It sounds like that would be roughly all the way to Mt. Elliott, which would be great. We know it's not going much past that because the Uniroyal site won't be done for some time. I wonder if it will be finished continuously to Mt. Elliott, or if there will be a few gaps for the time being... |

Yes, previous articles have said the Riverwalk will extend to Mt. Elliot park by the end of this year. |

Does anyone have any idea when work on the Uniroyal will start? I mean really start....And why did they give Bettis more property when he's been sitting on 40+ acres for the past few years anyway. That is a huge piece of the "gateway" to the downtown area, and it's unfortunate it has sat this long. I understand there are issues with contamination, but maybe the city should have given the development to developers that were prepared and qualified for this. I know for a fact that one of the countries largest brownfield redevelopment firms wanted the piece, and bid on it based on the amount of work that needed to be done. Of course they were denied, and the Uniroyal sits.... |

I'd much rather the developers wait on Uniroyal until the residential market is even better to maximize the potential of the site. This needs to be grown naturally, and IMO, revitalization hasn't yet reached that far, yet. Well, not enough to get a great project out of it. |

Nothing will happen on the uniroyal site until there is a decision on who will pay for the environmental clean-up of the site. IMO that might take a year or two. I am expecting a lot of litigation. The article mentions this you might want to read the article before you ask questions. Plus it has been talked about numerous times. |

I am very aware of the article and the controversy that surrounded Bettis being chosen. It's just unfortunate being a resident in the area, and knowing this huge redevelopment firm was ready and able to get the job done years ago, or at least started. Instead, the property sits vacant and the RiverWalk is put on hold for that area. |

Looking at a portion of the map from the Free Press site... I wonder if this map is really accurate in terms of how the walkway will hug the river. I rode my bike along the riverfront yesterday, and there are at least a couple of spots where it looks like the walkway would have to jog back a ways. For example, at Tricentennial Park & Harbor, currently you have to jog around the harbor to Atwater. (Which is not really a bad jog at all, since it's all along the mini-harbor there, but it'd be nice if the map showed that accurately.) Or, are they actually going to build a pedestrian bridge up and across the front of that harbor? That would mean tall boats/sailboats would probably not be able to park in that harbor. Same issue at Harbortown. It also helps to look at Google Maps... http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=detroit,+mi&t=h&om=1&ll=42.332566,-83.024261&spn=0.006171,0.013239 |

What growth spurt! All I see on the riverfront is 2 miles of vacant land and sqautter occupied buildings. |

Or dense... can't forget dense. I walked out onto the "hardhat only" area of the river walk construction last week to check it out. Putting those pylons in looks like some serious hard work. |

Considering the condition the so-called best and brightest (Dennis Archer) mayor left the river town district in. The movement happening now in a short time is phenominal!!!! |

And the silver lining to the Archer/casino debacle. It wouldn't be happenning if that disaster didn't take place. |

Matt_the_deuce, It would still be happening only it would be infill instead of clearance, which would be so much better. Archer f#$cked that area bad. IMO, one of the few blemishes during his administration. |
