You call that ghetto? Even Ypsilanti has better ghetto than that!

Besides, who stole the "ONE WAY" letters off the signs? : )

Thank you for the nice pics.

WOW! AIW, I didn't know that Windsor has a Ghettohood! That area reminds me of Detroit. I better tell the Ghettoman about this.

Definitely the worst looking neighbourhood in town. They have it under a special designation (similar to an empowerment zone) but it hasn't helped much yet. According to the city's website there are big plans for that area that includes demolishing most of that crap.

Are those pictures really representative of the housing stock in that area? I have driven past this area a few years ago and I was surprised how rundown most of it looked. Its location would make this area a prime candidate for gentrification (especially for older people looking for easy access to spending their children's inheritance at CW).

If and when the Urban Village takes off, investors may become interested in renovating houses on the other side of downtown.

My neighbourhood in Ottawa is close to downtown and was really sketchy (from what I have been told) about 10 years ago. Now one side of a turn of the century duplex can go for over $450,000. The are also plenty of decent infill projects.

Blitz: link to the city's plans for that area?

UiO, Take a look at the top of the screen when you click on the link.
The Marentette Glengarry CIP will give you all the info.

You are correct. The Urban Village West is the first to break ground and the city is hoping to duplicate it on the near east side.

That little brick cottage was interesting. Maybe they could move it someplace. Does Ontario have a Greenfield Village type of place?

Pam,

Yes they do. It is about 15-20 minutes outside of Windsor.

Thanks Goat. I was not aware of the MG CIP.

Now if only there was a plan to significantly reduce the amount of vacant office space downtown....

The plan should be quit building office space OUTSIDE of the downtown area!
When the Urban Village really gets going in about 5-8 years, I am confident that it will change the downtown area. The city of Windsor will finally have a downtown to call their own, once again. I am hoping for a place where good restaurants exist, an eclectic amount of bars, good shopping and entertainment.

I have to agree with Pam that the little brick cottage has a fascination to it. To beat the old cliche' to death, "If walls could only talk."

Nice set of photos, as always.

Thanks Andrew for giving us evidence that Windsor is close to Detroit.

Upinottawa, that $450,000 for 50% of a duplex is $50,000 USD. Can't buy much for that around here.

Goat, you are right. The centurians are lurking. Behave yourself.

Danny, Ghettoman ain't dead yet. He's just on vacation for the summer.

jjaba's question is "How long will it be before Windsor is booted from Canada for such blight?"

jjaba, Westsider.

Jjaba, us Canadians are getting richer by the minute. Now, one US dollar buys you less than $1.10 Canadian. Soon we'll be buying up American businesses....

Just released: The Hudson's Bay Company is building a signature store on the former Hudson's site in Detroit....

lol @ UpinOttawa. They (HBC) can barely hold their own now.

Heritage Village is actually growing. They have ben given some grant money over the years and done some wonderful things with it.
Next time you are in the area check out the Car museum. Absolutely fantastic!
