Anyone know what this means? Ironically, I just told a client last week that occupied buildings do not get tagged in our fair town, I guess I was wrong.

Who's Hughes?!? Or is it, "Whose Hughes?" Sorry Livernois, I'm really leaving it alone now. |

I am pretty sure it does say Hughes. From what I have seen "Hughes", is either the "trizzle", or they paint together. While leaving downtown via Grand River, look for Hughes' large tag on the back side of the semi-occupied Detroit Engineering building. Very irritating. Anyone see the graffiti popping up on the Lafayette Building? There should be a rule against tagging soon to be renovated buildings. |

If Rudy ruled in Detroit, that shit wouldn't be happening. The small stuff needs to be enforced too. |

I really actually like alot of graffiti... however, this $hit on occupied / being renovated buildings pisses me off... among alot of the guys I know who do this sort of thing, there is sort of an unwritten (but obvious) code... don't paint over something "respectable" i.e. if a famous street artist paints something great somewhere... don't paint over it... or if there is a business you respect (avalon, back ally bikes) don't touch it... along this same line, street artists never touch residential areas too badly... (because the artists are for "the people" and against "big business") street artists that DON'T obey this code are not well respected in the community and are normally boring taggers.. such as the non artistic person who wrote "my bad" on the above picture... whoever that is bores me. (and i'm VERY sorry this ass wrote on your building... this makes me upset) |

I agree Gannon, unfortunately that rule is not honored by taggers. Some taggers appeal to a stupid tagger sense of pride, and follow self imposed rules about tagging occupied buildings, though that is not always the case as this thread demonstrates. I hate graffiti, as I have stated in the past. I deal with it pretty consistently and it is infuriating. Though I do like it in areas like the St. Aubin Cut, or where is has been owner sanctioned. |

There are a handful of some lame taggers who are hitting occupied buildings or buildings being renovated. They are usually quite unoriginal or just plain stupid. On the plus side, this tag is small and easily removed. It's been discussed here before but, grafitti on occupied buildings in Detroit is not nearly as bad as other major cities. I'm not trying to minimize the problem, but this is best kept in context. |

"Owner-sanctioned" allows tagging to approach appreciated artwork status...that is another story entirely. I think it would be great if there were areas where this were encouraged and some of these people got recognition for what appears to be an amazing talent in many cases. That existing wall in the Cut sounds like JUST the place for this...and if more of the smaller art galleries and theaters sprinkled about the city were also allowed within the signage restrictions to do a wall or two, that might help new visitors identify them as places of art. Giving some of these folks righteous space to do their thang. Talent gone awry in artists run amok. |

you gotta paint that shit over a soon as you see it, or power wash, or strip it. Don't let the aerosol cretins have a moments pride in their work. Grafitti is a billboard that says "this place is a shithole, do whatever you want, no one is looking or cares". |

Correction Tayshaun--they are petty criminals who don't have any pride in their city, or it's population. Keeping it real....impoverished, blighted, crime ridden etc. If Detroit ever had police that give a shit the whole place would be their territory, and shit like that wouldn't happen every where, and you might accidently get something good going without some oppertunist thugs ruining it. |

West Village has been hit by a tagger in the past month. Spraying private homes, apartment buildings, abandoned buildings and a bus shelter. Oddly, the bus shelter was cleaned up in a few days. None of the other tags were erased, so last week I went to the hardware store and loaded up on several colors of spray paint. I already fixed two garage doors, and, if it it ever stops raining, will undo the tag on the front door of the abandoned library on Field @ Agnes. |

This is really sad that some people have to mess with progress. Whoever did this was obviously targeting an occupied building since it says "HUGHES... my bad!" |

It's an expression of art, also. Isn't this website based on Lowell's ARTISTIC creations? Shouldn't you guys appreciate Mr. Hughes's attempt to beautify this building? |

I was driving around town this weekend and noticed a huge tag that said "HUGHES" on a smaller, yellow, brick building somewhere. I can't remember where it was, but I was thinking, "this wasn't the first time I've seen HUGHES somewhere". |
