Your usual splendid shots, AIW. I am told that the large, old, unique Vanity Ballroom sign that once hung from the building was "salvaged" some time ago and may be in storage in GP. Anyone know it's whereabouts? The building, in its current state of undress, is just not complete without that sign hanging from its facade. |

Rock, you can see on the building where the sign used to be. They cut the I-beams that suported it, back to the brick. |

Hornwrecker's photo is interesting. Based on the vehicles in the shot, I'd place the timing or that photo sometime in the mid-70's. Whatever stone heads or gargoyles were below each window are already broken off & pillaged at that time. While it definitely has deteriorated more in the last 30 years, I'd say the place is still hanging on and not giving up the fight just yet. |

In Europe people live in houses that are 1000 years old. They have castles that are 3000 years old. And here in detroit we cannot take care of a building less than 100 years old. |

Yep those Europeans LOVE to preserve their historical landmarks. It's so sacred to them and it represents their ancenstors culture and way of living. In America NOTHING'S SACRED until any thing is over 100 years old. We can tear down any building we want in the name of urban renewal. In Detroit most of our BOOMTOWN/ DEPRESSION ERA ghettohoods are not going to be preserved. Those buildings and landmarks would NEVER going to make it up to the year 2050.
