Why?

If only we'd DONE SOMETHING about Capitol Park, this tragedy could have been avoided.

Republicans prefer to stay in youth hostels and homeless shelters, so that they can really learn about and understand today's urban issues.

The good lesson here is that it appears Mayor KK has learned to go ask corporate leaders first.

Everyone should remember the claims he and his top administration officials made early in their first term about corporate leaders being on board with certain initiatives.

Good job Mr. Mayor.

Both parties like to toss a bone to those they feel are moving up the ladder politically.

Sorry Kwame.

I absolutely have to disagree about the less hookers idea. I have been told by friends in DC that since the Republicans have been in power, the hooker trade has increased in their fair District. An interesting thought, nonetheless...

lol at the comments above.

Well better luck next time, I think we might have been still riding the high of the SB and thought we had some clout. REALITY CHECK.

The GOP would be fine with me- any major event coming to Detroit is fine with me.

if the democrats are "the peoples' party" maybe that's why their convention is bigger? just a guess... I've always been under the impression that there are ALOT more democrats... but *every* republican votes...

maybe it's just me, though... .andy.

But I think the question is why has the City not submitted a proposal? From the article, it seems they will not make the deadline, implying they dropped the ball in getting their schitt together.

Putting together bids for ALL of these types of events should be paramount for the City along with the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism & Convention Bureau, etc.

A missed and squandered opportunity, it seems.

Maybe it wa the city's way of not snubbing the Dem's when they really want the Republican Convention. I'm sure Nicholson would love it. I also would prefer them to the Dems.

...OR, it could be exactly as described in the article:

"Citing Michigan's and the city's struggling economy, Detroit couldn't get the financial commitments needed to meet today's deadline for the Democratic convention, the (Detroit) official said.

Costs to host the convention range from $30 million on up, said Ed Sarpolus, a political consultant and pollster from Lansing. Most of that money traditionally has come from corporate sponsors.

'How do you raise money for a partisan issue?' Sarpolus said. 'It's not a question that the city can get dressed up for it. They proved that during the Super Bowl.'"

Yeah, the GOP conventions normally spread much more money around. Dems may mean more people, but Republicans almost always mean more money.

Maybe the Dems told Detroit officials to not even bother, because they forsee that the pundits will have a great time harping on the fact that the democrats are holding the convention in the state with the slowest economy, and, oh yeah, a democrat governor who just got booted. It doesn't bode well...in fact, the spotlight could turn against the democrats and our state if the Dem convention was held here.

I hope I'm wrong though...we better not still have the slowest economy in summer '08. Let's not start a firestorm over my saying that Granholm will lose. I'm just saying that perhaps people high up in the Democratic party are weary of her chances, and don't want the spotlight on a state which they have lost momentum in, albiet a swing state.

hemingway- au contraire. Neither convention "spreads" that much money around, except indirectly. The delegates don't use restaurants and bars. They do attend parties and dinners - some in restaurants, but most hosted in their hotels and at the convention center. They have sponsored coffee bars, cocktails, etc. Sure some money gets spent in the local economy, but you should forget about the delegates filling the restaurants, bars and shops (Detroit's great shopping district) as the superbowl attendees did.

Google up why San Antonio, Orlando and others have said no to the convention. Because the promise of economic impact commensurate with the HUGE investment the national political parties require has not panned out.

And consider the terrible hit to Detroit's image when the big networks, to be serious reporters, travel into the neighborhood's of Detroit to comment on issues like the economy, the impacts of war-spending on domestic economies, the fall of the Big Three, etc. It would be devastating.

If you think republicans frequent hookers less, you are gravely mistaken. As someone who has worked in the senate, I have to say my republican friends were the scummier of the bunch, because they could afford it and knew they could hide behind the “moral” banner, which is a bunch of bullshit; they just use the religious right. The hooker union should lobby for the republicans to come to Detroit, they would make a killing on sleaze bags like Newt Gingrich............oh and supersport, sorry in advance if you are being sarcastic, but God forbid protecting the environment from the George Bush, self righteous corporate whores. Of course, it is pretty obvious through the recent tax cuts that will be paid back by our children, the republican party does not have much foresight or care about the future.

The only way fewer hookers could apply to Republicans is if the party had fewer MEN.

later - naturalsister

We all know that hookers are very popular with powerful men all over the world and throughout human history.

Can we please not turn this thread into the partisan dribble that has saturated the Non-Detroit Issues board for such a long time?

Oh shut up Karl, the usual funny guys are just cracking jokes. Here on the Discuss Detroit board, we don't let every topic turn into a goddamn political flame war.

Over here, we turn them into the feasability of light rail flame wars.

If we get the Republican Convention can someone "in the know" tell me where Tucker Carlson is staying.
