It's the womens exchange building. We've discussed it a bazillion times. https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/23585/25999.html https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/36206/34687.html https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/50492/50402.html https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/11557/22174.html |

Bet Cheli's will do huge business this summer with the Tigers being much improved and having larger crowds. An since Cheli's is located a few feet from Comerica Park's GCP entrance. |

NDavies, So you mean to tell me that if you grew tired of your woman that you could simply take her to this place back in the day and trade her in? How did popularity ever drop off to the point that they closed? |

I really enjoyed Cheli's Chili last time I was there, but it was a little on the pricey side I thought. |

Great adaptive re-use of a beautiful building by Cheli's. We need even more of this downtown. |

After re-reading all the old threads about the Women's Exchange, it's funny how the discussion of this building always leads to food threadjacking! The Chick-Fil-A threadjacking on one thread, the burger threadjacking on another... and now pulled pork.... Getting back to the building... IIRC.... the Women's Exchange was the place in 1916 where Henry Ford's only child Edsel Ford met his future wife Eleanor Clay for the first time. Because Mike Ilitch couldn't get the Women's Exchange building as part of the Comerica Park eminent domain process, he purposely ignored any requests from potential suitors for discussions about parking for that building. Except of course when Mr. Chelios came around... he couldn't ignore one of his own sports stars, and eventually got over that grudge over the "decorative sidewalk" issue... and the rest is history. Now about that pulled pork at Slows.... is it better than Memphis Smoke House?? (Message edited by Gistok on May 23, 2006) |

I highly doubt Mike Illitch had any consideration of Chelios opening a restaurant downtown if and when he went for this building. I don't even think this particular restaurant was a consideration 6 years ago. I don't think Chelios even owns the building. Can anyone say with 100% certainty who owns the building? |

Rjlj--according to this article, Cheli himself owns the building. http://www.detnews.com/2005/bu siness/0507/15/D01-248661.htm |

Not only does he own the building, he has a $1 million loft on the top floor and is seen quite frequently downstairs. I just missed him this past Sunday. |

Aiw, are you surea about that? The China Club interest in the place predates Chelios's interest. But they, like other couldn't get anyone from the Ilitch organization to return their phone calls over the parking situation (i.e. not enough of it). |

gistok is right. china club had interest in the place first. they eventually backed out 'cuz ilitches wouldn't give them the time of day for using the adjacent lot (for patio space, not parking). there was also a minor problem with size; they wanted more space. came to a tentative agreement to utilize some of the churches storefronts adjacent to the club, but that eventually fell thru as well... |

What about the Hard Rock Cafe? "Another site" had it closing like 3 months ago, they said it was fact, 1 month after Super Bowl they were shutting down. |

Wasn't this you, Sport?
quote:I've printed incorrect info in the past, some people have pointed out the mistakes. I guess the idea that some are reading somebody personal blog and expecting everything they read to be factual and dead nuts accurate is laughable at best.
