I heard a rumor that the State Historical Marker located on the Trumbull side of Tiger Stadium (b the door to the front office) has been removed. The Ty Cobb plaque was removed last fall, but this marker had remained in place. I haven't been able to get to the Stadium to confirm, but has anyone been by there recently and noticed this? Any word on the rumored impending demolition, i.e. timing of an announcement? Several weeks ago, the News or Free Press indicated that the city would have an announcement shortly, and I haven't heard anything since. Any info? |

Tiger Stadium marker swiped Missing in action: The large, heavy, cast-aluminum Michigan historical marker that until recently was hanging on the Trumbull Avenue fagade of Tiger Stadium. "It's history," said Peter Riley, one of the leading stadium preservationists, who also works for the lumber company across from the city-owned stadium. Karen Cullen, spokeswoman for Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, whose organization has been in charge of maintenance at Michigan and Trumbull since the last game there in 1999, said team officials knew nothing about the marker's disappearance. Detroit officials could not be reached. City development czar George Jackson has been telling people an announcement on the stadium's future is planned in the next two weeks. The marker, denoting the stadium's storied past, is state property. Officials in Lansing said anyone caught with it in their possession face up to 93 days in jail and a $5,000 fine. http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060531/NEW S05/605310382/1007/NEWS05 |

I am so sick of hearing about these markers stolen. Doesn't anybody give a damn anymore? Since the fund for maintenance of the stadium ran out, the city can't pay for even one guard to make sure this shit doesn't happen? And that Freep article is wrong-- the Illitches are no longer doing any maintenance at the stadium. |

WCSX was offering to be the go-between for whomever swiped the plaque and the rightful owners in case the thief suddenly developed a conscience, noting that it was a $500 fine and 93 days in jail for stealing it. A misdemeanor, in other words. Stealing an historic plaque should carry a much stiffer penalty, don't you think? |

I wonder what the stadium security guard(s) have to say about this. "Whoops"? Deplorable. |

Why isn't Mike Illitch being held responsible for the theft? He is the caretaker of OUR stadium. As usual, he will skate away from responsibility. |

He's not being held responsible, because logic tells you he didn't steal it. What, we have to put a guard in front of every monument or marker in the City? Come on. |

The security guard's booth is only a few feet away from the marker. Apparently the guard was patrolling elsewhere in the stadium, was in on the theft, was asleep, or (most likely) there isn't a guard anymore. |

Gotdetroit please get your priorities in order. It is obviously Mike Illitch’s fault that the marker was stolen. The thief had nothing to do with it. For every crime there is a reason, and the reason is never that Detroit has to many criminals. |

Get your story straight. Let that historic building crumble and disappear, after accepting millions of dollars of corporate welfare over the years to keep a property up. Then stand in the way of any meaningful ending to the Tiger Stadium story. Mike Illitch, corporate hero! |

I'm afraid that the historical marker is a "goner", just like the stadium will soon be. Yesterday morning on his radio program, Frank Beckman tried to get George Jackson to drop a hint about the upcoming announcement. After initially demurring, Jackson said something to the effect that "you will be able to easily tell just by looking that it was once the site of Tiger Stadium." Apparently he had not yet heard about the disappearance of the historical marker. |

I'm certainly not suggesting he's some sort of hero. But neither am I going to blame him for every single instance of shit that happens in the City. And what’s this talk of an Owner milking a city?! Never! Not in the United States. Not anywhere. All Billionaire owners are all altruistic do-gooders. It’s a fact. I looked it up. |

Well, the city owns the stadium, but they let the Tigers take the Ty Cobb plaque and move it to Comerica Park, where, um, Cobb roamed the outfield for many, many summers? Anyhow, I suppose the city probably does have the plaque in storage. I sure as hell hope so. Well, then again, maybe it's better off in somebody else's hands. |

Someone on the Tigers Forum said they called CoPa and inquired about touring TS. He was told no, and that it was being demolished next month. Don't know if there is any truth to this, but it wouldn't suprise me. |

Burnsie #429, no the guard was inside in line for a hot dog and missed the big play for the historical sign. The sign was sold to Ravenswood Antiquities, the same fences who sold hot Lee Plaza Lions to a town house developer on the Northside of Chicago. This Forum has a vast memory. jjaba on the Westside and old timey Tigers Fan. |

I'm sure the Michigan Historical marker was stolen for three different reasons. 1. Scrap metal = Money $$$ 2. Stealing it ones owns purpose (Detroit Collectors Piece) 3. Stealing it and selling it to another person = making money from a theft. If the Michigan Historical marker isn't found, then state will probably put in a new marker in it's place after they are done reforming the Tiger Stadium site. |
