anyone have any recommendations for furniture stores in and around detroit? i'm looking for various things, ranging from a TV stand/entertainment center to dining room table to office desk/shelving.

i only want someplace that sells stuff made of all wood. i don't want particleboard/pressboard/MDF + veneer. most of art van and gardner white's stuff is not what i'm looking for.

i saw this thread
https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/11557/35443.html
but was hoping for some more specific recommendations!

1. Check out the Marshall Field's at Northland. That's where they have their warehouse of unsold furniture. (Special orders that were never picked up, display pieces, damaged stuff, etc.) You can find some very good furniture there at good prices.

2. In my opinion, the best high-end furniture stores are Gorman's, Marshall Field's and a place in Bloomfield called "Hillside." All of them have good sales around Christmas/New Year's.

3. Don't instantly dismiss Art Van. I had to cheap-out when getting chairs for my living room and went to their store on Woodward in Royal Oak. I was surprised to find a lot of stuff there that didn't look like it came from the set of "Roseanne." Their prices were good, even on my special orders, and they did free delivery.

If you can bear to go to the dreaded suburbs, I highly recommend McLaughlin's Furniture. They have stores in Southgate and Novi. Also, once a year, they have a warehouse sale in their distribution center, which is near DTW.

I second the northland clearance center, also "bright ideas" ('designy'-er stuff) has a clearance center on telegraph between 8 and 10 mile as well.

IKEA is opening soon yes, and while they do have reputation for disposable particle board furniture, a decent amount of their higher-end product is in fact solid wood construction...you need only check the individual product's specs to verify

What about Naked Furniture in Dearborn? That's all wood.... unfinished, though.

If you've got lots of loot, check this place out on the NW side.

Exotic Furniture opened its doors recently on Grand River Avenue.

Owner Mark Jones says the store will be the first in Michigan to carry the high-end Fijian furniture line Pacific Green, a line of furniture that also works well in lofts. "“These couches look as good from the front as they do from the back," he says.

There's a furniture store on the corner of West Vernor and Central in Southwest Detroit (48209) called Danto's.

Tenpenny in Livonia has some decent quality goods, not very cutting edge though. Art Van might have some good product, but I can't get past the sales people. Just leave me alone and let me shop.

Gardenia on Gratiot just past Eastern Market may have some things for you.

If you are on the Eastside the Eastland MF also has a very good clearance center.

There is a place that sells lamps and other stuff on East Jefferson not too far out of downtown but I can't recall the name.

Fred's Unique Antiques and Furniture on 8 Mile near Gratiot gets some nice used stuff. The entire 20th century is usually represented in the store, although they tend to get big batches of 1984-era stuff. Their prices aren't outrageous.

I'd recomend Exotic Furniture as well if you want a modern and/or tiki look. But it does cost quite a bit.

Art Van has some very nice higher end stuff. You usually have to ask a sales person (you can find some good ones from time to time) to show you the good stuff, but they'll gladly do so since they work on commission and you'll be making a big purchase. I bought a very nice (and very expensive) modern-style leather and metal couch and am very happy with the product and the service I received.

You might also call around to some of the local art galleries (555, 4731, etc.) about furniture. There are quite a few local artists that make some very nice, one of a kind pieces of furniture in many different styles. The galleries may have pieces on exhibit or be able to refer you to an artist who may fit the style you are looking for.

Not for that particular furniture, but we did purchase a dining room set and a bedroom set from McLaughlin's. They have been family owned and run for many years, and offer great service.

Have you made the rounds of your older relatives' attics and basements? (Assuming you have family here). I got a few nice things this way.

I'm not sure what style of furniture you're looking for, but if Danish Modern suits your fancy, there is a House of Denmark in Livonia on Plymouth Rd. It has been around forever, but now their store is closing so they're trying to sell out their entire stock. However, I saw the ad for this about a week ago, so I'm not sure if it's still going on.

That's Gardella on Gratiot.]

I purchased a dresser from them about 4 years ago. Solid wood with ducktailing. Top of the line 4 drawers around $600 bucks. It's a beautiful piece. They get things from all over the world.

Great Detroit tradition. They've been there for 40+ years.

That place on Jefferson across from the RenCen seems to have some cool antique furniture, but I have no clue how much that stuff goes for.

It ranges,

I bid on Coleman Young's Globe when they auctioned several items from his estate. I had $1100 bucks. I was out of the running in 4 bids.

Then at another auction, I was able to get a early 20th century jewelry armoire for $270. A real beauty. Another sold mahogany with 'dovetailing' and the most beautiful satin finish I have ever seen

If you want really great furniture- You have to go to Holly and visit Winglemire furniture-
They carry the best furniture at reasonable prices- and have been in business since 1858- yes 1858- not a typo! There are also lots of antique stores in Holly with good wooden furniture-
ps- bring money

Wait a minute, didn't you say the prices were resonable, but yet you p.s. and say bring money?

Also, the guy said, WEST side. Holly = not west side. And a hell of a long way to go shopping.
