I have a strange question. I want to start collecting plans, sketches, ideas, proposals, etc of proposed projects in the city of Detroit that have never come to fruition.

This came to me when I found an old document from SEMCOG that had the RapidLink proposal, with a map outlining which streets would have routes, and what the stops would be on the "Woodward Line." While I thought this plan was scrapped completely, I think its in the works again.

Does anyone have such maps or outlines for the original People Mover system? What about sketches of riverfront developements that never happened? The millions of plans for the Casinos? Streetscape renovations that never happened? Skyscrapers that never went up? A shot at what the original plan was for the Book Building (not B-C)?

Can you post pics on this thread or email me files at cmichalakis@gmail.com?

Thanks!

i've seen posted on this forum a few times an insert called 'Unbuilt Detroit' from either the Free Press or the News. I (very roughly) joined them together to make one panorama of what detroit would have been if all the proposed projects had been built. Unfortunately, the size limits mean it would be very small if i posted the picture itself here, so instead, here is a link:

there were many other pictures from that insert, perhaps someone can find the link to the previous posts with them. unfortunately i have to run right now, or i would do it myself.

well, you got my curiosity going, regardless of my lack of time, so here's the link to one of the old threads - i wouldn't be surprised if there were more.

Does anyone have a copy of the text that accompanied "Unbuilt Detroit"? There are many smaller and lesser-known proposals in the skyline render that I am curious about.

Also, does anyone have more detailed information or renders of Saarinen's waterfront plaza and tower? It's really too bad this was never built.

I found a mass transit plan that showed how the people mover would link into trains and subways at Wayne State back when I was an undergrad. I was shocked at how rational some of the location of the stops were. I'm afraid there is no real 'archive' of never done stuff.

Christos, there's a thread still on the main page called 'book tower', that's got a link to a drawing of the 81-story addition to the book tower. also in the same post by pagesix1536 is a link to a drawing of the fisher building as originally envisioned.

Thanks everyone! I'll post some of the SpeedLink stuff on here.

Detroitplanner- do you have any proposed route maps or know where I can get them?

Scottr- are you the same Scott I once worked for?

no problem Christos, i've always loved the 'what might have been' stuff, so it was my pleasure. i've spent hours looking at old subdivision plats in my hometown trying to figure out what - and why - they changed. old pictures too, trying to figure out what the town used to look like, and what the buildings that survived used to be.

i don't think i'm the one you know. i've rarely been in a position to have anyone actually work for me, the last time i was, it was about 1997, unless i'm forgetting something. who knows though, maybe...
