A neat old gas station down the street from my place. The current owners, a heavy equipment rental firm, told me that G. Oprean was the original owner who had the gas station built. They bought the building from the Opreans' in the early 70s, it was not a gas station at that time. They did not know when the Opreans' stopped selling gas. I like this location as old architecture was preserved and integrated to work nicely with an existing business.

There's a lovely example on the NW corner of Michigan and Rosa Parks, next to a very well maintained White Castle.

Bulletmagnet:

Around Russel/ Warren there is/was a deco looking, faded red station back a couple yrs ago. Very round looking, no towers.
Is is one that got killed off?
May not have been Warren, but it was a street parallel to it, and very likely N of Canfield.
Pretty much nothing else around it but fields.
I still want to buy it and move it.

BTW, thanks for all the shots,,,,,You rock, and obviously roll quite a bit.

Thanks Gibran. This post, as well as all my other photos, is just for S & G's. Do you have any photos from your time at Sunoco? Please post them if do. I also worked near that area during the seventies. Don’t worry about that brain of yours, its just fine. Don’t worry about that brain of yours, its just fine. - Bullet

Gibran,
I worked at three of the four corner gas stations at Cadieux and Harper. That was in the seventies. I remember carrying a big wad of money and making change right on the driveway. I don't think that would be safe now. There were a few times when people would stop and ask for directions to Cadieux and Harper. My brother who also worked there would always tell them, "You can't get there from here".

Good stations at the corner of Burns and Gratiot, Harper and Audubon (I think it's Audubon). Going to try and get some pictures of those two and post them. Trouble would be the chain-link fence around them kind of ruins the visibility.

Gibran,
Was that Sunoco owned by a guy named "chico"?
Also does anyone remember the Kraussman brothers that had, I think it was a Gulf station where Kelly split from Hayes? one of the brothers, Dick had a station in one of the Points.

Caldogven,
I worked with a guy last-name of Kraussman at the Cross Company in Fraser. One of his relatives had a station at Cadieux and Kercheval.

The Sunoco was owned by John but he sold it and moved to 8 mile and 194 exit and opened one up there...He later had a heart attack and had to leave...I helped close the old one down and then worked between college at the 8 mile one....in 1978 we still were checking oil etc..

Psip, I go into that station often as it is close to where I work. It's a 24 hour BP now. We are often treated to a free coffee when we roll in during a night of plowing snow. It is a good location, with cops from Detroit and the Grosse Points making regular stops there.

There used to be a station on the corner of milwaukee and brush but I can't find any info on it. Has anyone come across this location, or have any further info on this?

Hopefully I didn't just overlook it already posted in this discussion.

I think the station your referring to is on John R. and Milwaukee. I was told by someone that there was a station way back when on the corner of Brush and Milwaukee. South West Corner.

Fareastsider, the time stamp on this camera is a real pain in the ass. My other, more usable point and shoot camera, went missing, so I'm stuck with the back-up for now. But I will take your constructive criticism to heart, I'm holding off on the snaps for the moment.

The first gas station is in the Chene – Ferry St. neighborhood. The second one is an earlier Charlevoix shot that was rejected for a different view of the same place. I'm working on that one Gtat44 ^ .

I just finished a small transaction w/ one of the founders (83 yrs old) of Hudson Oil Company. Hudson had about 750 stations across the mid- and southwest in the '30's - '60's, including a few in the Detroit area. He sold the company years ago and didn't know if any remained here.

Anyone know anything about them or have any pictures of Hudson Oil stations?

YEp, forgot about that one. Funny, I saw that one nearly every day of my life and forgot it. About 5 years ago, it was still (Milt's Towing) as you see in the messy billboard on the left.

I'n surprised no one caught the one on 6 Mile and Dresden, Gratiot and Pelkey and Greiner and Schoenherr.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but regarding the antenna question, the one on the left looks like a scanner/C.B. antenna, and the one on the right looks like a horizontally polarized FM antenna. (I’m going to look em up).Urbanize, that gas station is on Kercheval near (east of) Mt Elliot. BTW, the gas station on the north side of Medbury and west of Chene is sans Edsel ( http://edsel.net/ ):

There was a defunct gas station at the corner of Winthrop and Fenkell that housed Fox's Pasties. It looked allot like the picture of the one at 10150 Mack. I believe it was there until the middle 1970's. Later Fox's moved to Carlysle St. in Dearborn

Fox's Pasties! There's a blast from the past! I've never had a better pastie then Fox's. Barb's in Clawson does come pretty close though. Mom is from the UP, she interviewed Mr Fox for a Wayne State college class project in the late 60s. I found the audio tapes recently while going through some things.

Ptpelee, can you grab a snap of that defunct gas station and post it for us? I remember going to a pretty good Mexican restaurant on W. Warren in Dearborn when we lived on Casper. The place had been an old gas station, converted to an eatery.

This place is on the corner of Harper & Audubon. It looks like it was a gas station at one time but I don't remember ever seeing any gas pumps there. There used to be a guy who did auto reconditioning there. I think everybody called him Woods.

Ordinary, the shot in question is on the south side of Grand River around Oakman Blvd. I'll get a better cross street for you when I'm out that way next week. I was exploring the west side this morning after it was suggested by a number of viewers that I do so. So Ordinary, lets see who gets the next neat DDGS shot...

Nice pic Ordinary. I'm reminded of the time quite a few years back, when we were up north in some poe-dunk town. We were waiting for the service attendant to come out and fill 'er up, but the place looked deserted. Over the pump was a hand written sign that read 'Pay Here'. Well, we needed fuel, so we just helped ourselves, and put the money under the rock on top of the pump. (This was long before wide spread practice of self-service). When we were done filling, a woman came out a door that led to an apartment upstairs. We explained ourselves to her thinking she was the owner. "Oh, the owner is out fishing, and wont be back till tomorrow" she said. "Just leave the money under the rock, or come back tomorrow to pay him". My, how times have changed!

Thanks. Nice story. Yes things sure have changed. I mentioned earlier about making change with a big was of bills right on the driveway of a station when I was an attendant.
I like this thread because when I was a kid, I thought it would be cool to own a gas station that had a little house on top. I would live in the upstairs and go downstairs to go to work. Things would be so simple. Darn self-serve stations ruined my dream!
I'm going to take a picture of a station at Guilford and Harper. It would be on the Expressway side. It was one of those with the little house on top. It's been added on to (quick oil change place) and it doesn't look much like a gas station anymore. It was an ARCO station for a long time but I can't remember what it was before that. Some guy last name of Boone owned it for a while. I think he had some other ones too.

Ordinary, I think its a gonner. I'll look tomorrow with camera. We use to fill up there, so I know the place well. Do you know the Martin Mull song 'Living Above My Station' ? Please go through the trouble to find and listen to it: it's about YOU! (I have the LP) Did I post this one?:

Bullet, No I don't think you posted that one. I've actually had work done on one of my old cars there. I didn't know they were still around.
I was going to mention something about that Martin Mull song but I figured nobody had ever heard of it. I haven't heard that one in a long time. A friend of mine had that LP. I liked the song about the chicken and eggs and the one about giving Jesus Christ the football and let him even up the score. I think that was from the same album. He is actually a good guitarist.
I've got another one here. It's on the corner of S. Fort and Conway. It's right by the last one I posted. I mistakenly wrote W. Fort & Omaha. It should have been S. Fort and Omaha. I took it at the same time but was having trouble posting it.

Hey all, great pics and info. I grew up un the 50-60's in Royal Oak and my grandfather had a service & repair shop in Detroit and I would love to find a picture of it. It was located at 1375 Michigan ave, corner of 8th near Tiger stadium. I am sure that it is gone now but hopefully someone will have a pic. I now live in Prescott AZ and own and operate a European auto repair shop her. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers, GS

Gstamour,
You must have a great memory. I drove down Michigan on my way home from work and there it was on the corner of Michigan and 8th. If you look close at the one picture you can see the address painted on the corner. Still looks like it's in good shape. And it's for sale! This could be a satellite location for your European auto repair shop!

Ordinary,
Thanks for the pics, very interesting. My grandfather had the shop from 1920-1933 when he died. Do you think that that is the same building? Looks to me like it was either rebuilt or a whole new one built. I am hoping that I can eventually find a picture from the 20's.

Thanks Bullet. I found a few more but didn't have time to take pictures.

Gstamour, I would have to believe that the old one was torn down and this one was built in its place. I don't know anything about the history of building styles but the building in the picture just doesn't look like something that was built early in the 20th century.

I talked to the owner (pictured) and he said he was going to side the place, but thought different of the idea. The hardware in the sign works, and he might use it to advertise:

That Van Dyke and Emily gas station was mentioned in the Old Photo XL thread by Bullet. In Old Photo XLI thread there is mention of DIXIE GASOLINE stations by Mikem, at least 3 or 4 of them. Where any of the stations pictured in this thread a former Dixie gas station?

This is a super thread. Looking at all the pictures, I notice that several of the older buildings had a "Spanish style" roof. Does anyone know why this style was chosen for gas stations? How long did this style last? Was it affiliated with a particular brand? Was it used in other parts of the country?

The one on Whittier and Balfour used to be called Jack's or something like that. He also owned a bar down the street. There is (or used to be) a really neat sign out in front, hanging on a pole.

I've noticed that style roof and it's not affiliated with any brand as far as I know. They are the more interesting looking buildings. I used to think those tiles were clay but I think they're concrete.

Ordinary, nice shots, indeed. The question about the roofing I can’t answer, Waz. I think there was a period in Detroit (and elsewhere) where this was just the style of the times. If you look around Detroit, one can see examples of the tile roof you asked about on all manner of buildings, from gas stations to hospitals, to privet homes, to name but a few. It (the tile) is an attractive materal and very durable, which is why it was so commonly used commercially. BTW Ordinary, I got a few more pics to post when I get a little more time then now, so keep up the good work pal .

Here are a couple of slides that I had transferred onto C D. They were in a box that I had not looked through for a long time. As I sorted them, I came across these two beauties:

Inside shot 1:

Inside shot 2:

I really love these shots. If you look closely, you may see the price of spark plugs, batteries, and such, from 1949.

Bullet,
That Mobil Gas Station was located on the SE corner of East Seven Mile and Waltham. I know that only because I recognized the Castiglione Accordion Company building in the background of the first photo. I took lessons there from 1960 to 1964. I think the gas station is gone but I know that the old Castiglione building (and sign) is still there. It stands empty - they moved to Eleven Mile and Schoenherr.

Good work Mikeg! Looks like I got a photo assignment lined up for the weekend. Ookpik, I really like these shots! When viewing the original slide (On the screen or w/ Lupe), one can clearly make out the prices on the shelves, and all the detail in the entire station is remarkable. I tend to get transfixed in there. I also have a slide of the two vehicles parked outside, the red truck and the beige car. I will be posting more of these as time permits. Mikeg, any photos of you with your Accordion?

The red arrow points from what appears to be the old Mobil Gas Station to the sign on the Castiglione Accordion building across Waltham on the west side of the street. The Castiglione sign and building appear through the gas station window in the background of the first photo Bullet posted.

Thanks for posting the above, Cman710 and Mikeg. Kodachrome really was Eastman Kodak’s gift to mankind, Jeffrey_thomas. I (Almost) was going to say I could smell that grease and navel jelly too, Psip, but I was gushing enough already. Gibran, back then you got those things at a hotdog stand (but you knew that) not a gas station. If any one wants to host a slide show sometime, I would love to show these on the screen. It would be cool to see what other Detroit stuff we could come up with. I have a projector and a roll-up screen. Maybe at a DY meeting sometime?
