OH, that's what that is, thanks! Ok, I knew of DTE's project, I just didn't realize it was in that lot. I've seen the renderings, and they look nice. Good thing it's not just bare ass...phalt! heh.

Check out Greektown this week to see the pedestrian bridge steel span across the street. Someone take a pic or two. Work will be at night.

FYI in case noone has noticed, they have just punched a hole into the side and rear of the school on Monroe and St Antoine apparently for where the sky walk is going to run through...

The steel is up for the hotel-to-casino walkway crossing Monroe/St. Antoine intersection. Looks like there will be plenty of glass. According to a friend who works there, the buffet will be housed in the "gap building" going up in the vacant space on Monroe.

I was able to get an opportunity to snap a few around our favorite new (and only) highrise construction site today (June 20, 2007). :-)

Geese does that look awful the way the arbitrarily cut thru the St. Mary's School Building between the 2nd and 3rd Floors to align with the Hotel and Casino.

But I guess one has to be thankful that it wasn't torn down.

I appreciate the photos.

Hopefully the skywalk will be transparent, so as to not detract too much from the presence of the church over the street.

Glad to see the school renovations and a new building going in next door.

I didn't know the school was to be restored. What will the end result be? A buffet?

I think that Greektown needs to be renamed, "gerbil tube town."

The school is being rehabbed for use by team members of Greektown. Greektown Casino does not own the building, but has a 99 year lease on it. The tube will only cross over Monroe. The second walkway from the St Mary's School to the Current Casino will be implemented into the building that is being built to fill the gap between the two, which will be the loading docks. The loading docks will not face Monroe, but instead will still be via the back alley, though the alley will now be within the building as well. The entrance into the building will be where "Nickel Heaven" currently exists. Hope that helps. I can give further details when I have time, as I have them lying around here somewhere.

Sport, how many floors will the 'filler' building be, and will it blend in or contrast with the historic architecture of the district? Will Rossetti be the architect for this one, too, if you know?

Also, is there any talk of what kind of retail maybe going in, or are they building this as a speculative retail building?

The infill building will be roughly the same height as the adjoining casino (the 'Pegasus building'). But where the casino building is 5 stories, the infill will be only 3. Each floor of the new building is twice the height of the old structure. The facade is brick, with some articulation to fit into the neighborhood. It is visually separated from the St. Mary's School and the Pegasus building by a glass ribbon that extends from grade to the roof. HBG (Hnedak Bobo Group) is the Architect for the Casino but the design of facade of the infill building was influenced by SDG (Sims Design Group) of Detroit, who is involved with the project.

Thanks. Keystone, what is your involvement in this? Are any tenants already lined up, or, again, is this being built as a speculative retail building? BTW, I thought Rossetti was one of the executive architects for both the hotel and casino, are they just for the hotel?

Latest is that there will actually be retail in the infill building between St Mary's and the Casino, but the retail in the parking garage has been scrapped. I believe the timeline that I saw was:

Parking deck: October 2007
Gaming: August or September 2008
Hotel: October 2008

Seems there were a few other dates I saw, and those above may be off by a month or two, but it gives a rough time line.

yeah I didn't see how or where they would possibly incorporate ground floor retail into that parking deck...

SS, where are you getting your information?

I'm disgusted that they've gone back on the plan to build retail space along Monroe. While this complex is much more distinctive and, in the end, good for the city, the street-level won't be much better looking. Greektown Casino IS NOT helping its neighborhood all that much. That whole block of Monroe will just be a garage with, let me guess, a landscaped setback from the street? If that's the case, thanks for nothing (when it comes to improving Monroe St.)

How do you know that that setback can't be used for retail in the future, and how is having this block 'just a garage' any worse than what was there before (a garage)? It may not be an improvement, but it's definitely not a loss.

That's what I'm saying, other than more of a shadow over the street (from the huge hotel-- which is fine with me), that block of Monroe will be the same basic thing...maybe with a nicer facade. And I can just never see that much parking being used. I only hope that this will shift/increase the supply so much that the prices on downtown surface lots will fall and we'll get more infill.

We can only hope the setback isn't permanent.

I guess the problem with building retail space is that you have to be able to fill it...how much luck has the opera house had with that? same goes for many othe rparts of the city

On a related note, is the construction on Lafayette the beginning of the expansion of the gambling hall? Does anybody have a link to what that building will eventually look like?
