I heard the power at the Book Tower was cut out on Friday afternoon (8-31). Still no word yet on when power will be turned back on.

That explains why Bookies was closed on Sat. night- we walked over from the Jazzfest to have a beer but it was all dark.

This is the second time this year DTE has cut power to the Book. Those new owners from New York are sure taking their Detroit investment seriously.

matt, i heard that as well, but (assuming that is the case) it has only been since the power was first cut in april. when that happened, they were running on generators for a few days.

everything in the book tower is on one meter, so bookies is on the same meter as everything else in there...

When is the Requiem Mass for the Book Tower? If there is to be one, I will fly up to Detroit for the occasion...

Have no fear, Charlotte. Even if the Book Tower were to close, it'd sit vacant for years before it went anywhere, giving ample time for the B-C and Griswold to help revitalize Washington Blvd. and bring in a serious, reputable landlord.

I just hate to see with all the progress that has been made all around it to see a skyline building go dark like that - it's a PR black eye and damn shame.

the book tower is mostly empty, the land lords couldn't pay the bill because they can't find any new tenants this is just a simple reminder of how difficult the real estate market is in detroit if you can't get any state or federal aid (tax Credits)

No, the power is still off. Some of the businesses on the ground floor are operating this afternoon, and some of those are using generators.

Not quite monahan - there are buildings that are doing fine downtown. Quite a few, in fact.

The book tower's infrastructure has not been updated in decades. The floor plans aren't suited for offices, as the construction of the building is so old. This problem was starting to occur years ago.

You too can buy a 426,000 sf bldg. for ONLY 9,500,000. I guess the owners bit off more than they could chew. For another 10 Mil. in upgrades/ Quicken can have a nice office tower. I'd like to earn the 200K commission on that deal.

Book Bldg - STEAL at this PRICE - Once in a life time opportunity to snap up an immensely profitable investment property - A popular office tower under renovation is being offered for... Detroit MI 426,500 Office Building $9,500,000

No, Crain Communications is not on Madison. It's on Gratiot, on the former site of the Stroh's brewery in a development called Brewery Park which, by the way, was supposed to save Detroit by providing an example of how suburban-style office parks could be built in the city.

I assume that Charlottepaul is talking about the building near Ford Field with the PricewaterhouseCoopers logo on it, which is also not on Madison, but at least it's somewhere near Madison.

Which has nothing to do with anything, because the fact is that anyone who thinks that "there are buildings that are doing fine downtown. Quite a few, in fact." is clearly delusional. There might be 1 or 2 which are doing fine, but I can name many more that are not: 150 W. Jefferson, Comerica Tower, Guardian Building, Chase Tower, 211 W. Fort, Michigan Building (owned by everyone's 2nd favorite slumlord), First Federal Building (n/k/a 1001 Woodward), David Stott Tower, Michigan Mutual Building, Marquette Building, Penobscot Building, etc. And those are only a few of the occupied ones, so we're not including the former AAA building (also owned by everyone's 2nd favorite slumlord), the United Artist, the David Whitney Building, the Broderick Tower, the Metropolitan Building, the Fine Arts Building, the Free Press Building, that building on Capital Park that Citylover always cries about, etc. Then there are the buildings that are about to be empty such as the United Way headquarters in Capital Park and the Book Tower.

I just got an invite to a reception put on by Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit. The return envelope is to their office in the Book Building.

More of the story:

211 W. Fort Street is 85% leased according to their website.

150 West Jeffersons' site shows a total of 5 floors worth of empty space, out of about 25 floors, so maybe around 80% occupied.

And there are a bunch of other buildings downtown that are probably similar, although most of them aren't speculative.

Of course there's a bigger bunch of buildings that are mostly empty, and overall it's been getting worse as far as offices go, but I don't think what is still there should be downplayed because of that.
