My fiance and I have been considering getting married downtown sometime next year and have been looking at some options. I was wondering what the peeps on Dyes would suggest. Does anyone have experience or been to some unique weddings in the city?

Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

get someone at the Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle to sponsor you... they did a great job with my reception.

i got married at the detroit yacht club in 2005. you do not need a sponsor to get married there. i had both my ceremony and the reception there and it was a great experience. my guests were very impressed with the club, especially because it is not your typical wedding hall. it is absolutely beautiful.

My brother and his wife got married in G.P. and had their reception at the DYC, with photo ops at the Gaelic League (I know, it's an Irish thing) and MCS beforehand. Awesome. The reception at DYC was flawless. Beautiful space, great service, great veranda views of the river and city. It was a large reception and everyone had a great time. Seriously, check into DYC for the reception.

Also, if you're Catholic, I went to a wedding at St. Mary's in Greektown a few years ago and it's a beautiful place for a ceremony.

Old St. Mary's is indeed beautiful, however they are pretty strict about only letting members get married there.

Went to a wedding at the DAC. Amazing.

I've also heard the DYC does a great job.

B-C I would definitely check into. Lot of great history there as well.

Doesn't the Masonic do a lot of (or used to) receptions? Maybe I'm off on that one....

Yes, you'll be able to use to Book Cadillac.

I've been to a wedding at Comerica Park, in the Tiger Club. It was pretty good; it was just big enough for a large wedding. It could comfortably hold most weddings. They turn the lights on in the stadium, and you can take photos on the field.

As for the church, I recommend choosing a place that you're going to be loyal too. I have a hard time with people from the suburbs who choose a token beautiful church in the city for their wedding and then don't go back there. If it's a Catholic wedding, I recommend St. Mary's, St. Anne, or St. Joseph, but a lot goes into such a decision, especially if you're going to join the parish.

I think it would be really cool to have the reception at the Book I only worry about scheduling and if everything will be complete by then. I guess all I need to do contact someone over there. Their website says complete fall of 08 and that's when we are planning on doing the wedding.

As far as choosing the church you're right it does make sense to choose a church that we would stay loyal too, although some of the church's mentioned here are beautiful and would be amazing.

My wife and I got married 2 weekends ago at the Traffic Jam in Midtown. Not your typical wedding, but it was a blast. The food was stellar, the drink was plenty and all of the 130 people who came had a great time. The staff was awesome. All around a great party.

If TJ's is not quite what you're looking for (it is an eccentric locale for a wedding I admit), definitely consider having them cater.

We had about 30 out of town guests. We did a block of rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn, which was perfect. Also, we did "welcome to the D" gift bags complete with all kinds of Detroit swag. Just an idea to consider.

I remember going to the Traffic Jam & Snug many years ago. I loved the bar-b-cued beef and the basket 'o fries with a pitcher of sangria. Do they still bake their own breads?

Welcome to the forum. What sort of swag did your guests get and did they have any comments about Detroit -- good or bad?

We were married downtown right on the street by a vagrant for 25¢. Maybe that's not so unique. It sure was funny though. :-)

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to go up into the Guardian Buildings 30th floor events space. It was set up for a wedding reception at the time and seemed to be a very fitting place with great views all around. Being that high up and in that type of environment would require some pretty technical planning and could be a logistical nightmare depending on what kind of guests would attend. My family wouldn't "get it" as we're use to receptions out at the K of C Hall on County Road Bucktooth.

My girlfriend told me Sacred Heart Seminary has an extraordinary chapel.

We've hosted a few weddings and receptions in the "Gothic Room" at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. This ornate room used to be one of the main public spaces aboard the City of Detroit III, one of the most luxurious steamships to ever cruise the Great Lakes. The price for the space is pretty good, too.

Diesel-
I attended a wedding at the DAC earlier this year. It was EXCELLENT. One of the best ones I've been too. We had drinks and appetizers on the main floor and the reception was upstairs in the big ballroom. Fantastic fantastic place. And the Tigers were playing that night too.

We all had a wonderful time. highly recommended.

I also attended a wedding at the DAC this Summer. Excellent place, very good service, good food, very unique compared to most big room kind of places and a great location. After the reception petered out, a bunch of us went to Cliff Bells - lots of fun.

A co-worker called the Century club on my recommendation and was curtly told by one of Chuck's girls that "all receptions here START at $20,000"

I guess they don't need the business
