The "Bates Garage" is always open, and has literally never been full $5, and it sits at the corner of Randolph and Monroe......can't get much closer to Greektown than that.

"All in all, TJ, perhaps Detroit does need more parking for times when downtown is at peak capacity with games and festivals and shows. But what about the other 95% of the time when those spots are just wasted space?"

That's all I'm saying...for Tigers games, I park at the Opera House garage and never have a problem...this particular night, our plan was to come downtown and spend some money at the Greektown and Old Sheleileigh (lol, did I botch that) and we were unable to park our car after 30 minutes of checking different garages

the casinos, banks and city government understand this....I'm quite surprised so many Detroiters do not

DEGC should build parking status meters around downtown and connect them to all of the garages in the CBD.

Similar to the one at Northwest Terminal.

That would be awesome if say you were driving off I-375 and you could see a electronic status report of a garage's occupancy.

For all the lazy people!

".....we drove around for 1/2 hour looking for ANYWHERE to park but couldn't find anything...."

Give me a freakin break.

Are you trying to tell me that ALL of the empty lots and ALL of the parking garages and ALL of the street parking in ALL of the CBD was full on a friday night? THE ONLY time i can think of that happening is probably the night of the fireworks (not Wrestlemania, the All-Star game, NAACP convention, NAIAS, i could go on).

You didnt really want to park.

To my knowledge, the Fox garage didn't even fill up on fireworks night. I can't be completely sure because I stayed an extra hour in Greektown afterwards.

There is always parking to be had. With the people mover, the Cobo lots are always a viable option.

On the night of a sold out Tigers game I was able to park in front of the Kales building without any problems at all, and it was free.

Just to stick up for him I doubt that thejesus decide to drive downtown just to say there was no parking and go elsewhere.

There is more than enough parking for anything downtown but a lot of people just don't know where to go - the Bates garage is a prime example.

Yeah, definitely seems easier to park over there on the west side of Woodward. Over on the eastern side around I75 and what not it tends to be more of a mad house sometimes.

An interesting look at the Detroit casinos from the Boston perspective:

Detroit betting heavily on casinos

I think a point oftentimes missed in the 'casinos hurt local business' critique is the Greektown experiment. There really is no casino anywhere like it... integrated into the fabric of the city in a very walkable neighborhood. I see more traffic in neighboring restaurants now than ever.

I hope the 'lessons learned' from both the City Planning side as well as the Casino business side are shared with these other cities contemplating casinos. Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, take note.

I am really surprised to see the walkway already up. I kinda figured that would be one of the last things to go up.

Once into the upper floors (any day now), you'll see the pace quicken. All of the upper floors are basically identical, so the forms can be reused and 'flown' from one floor to the next.

It's awesome to be able to walk so close to a job like this on a public sidewalk. Makes for a great lunch hour.

I remember when the 'Hines' building was under construction and the workers chose the Checker Bar as their haunt of choice. Anyone know the Greektown construction workers' watering hole?

They were running commercials on TV last night (Ch.7 11pm News) saying the Parking Garage is now open. Don,t believe it. It's still being built.

I love their commercial voice over, " Exit on Layfette for safe and secure parking" while they show a car entering the garage.

No worries about actually touching Detroit soil. You can get right off the e-way, enter the garage, drop off your money and leave without having to see anything downtown.

mmm, sweet ...

Exactly what I was thinking, Gnome. You don't even need to touch the street with the new pedestrian bridge, nor drive a single block on city streets because you can enter from teh service drive.

Is the 40 foot setback on Monroe still a mystery space? What will happen there?

Thanks, Flybydon.

Only in Detroit to we have commercials that celebrate parking ramps. I have heard one on the radio on 97.1fm that has touted that "this amazing ramp will change Detroit".

Well damn, someone should have thought of this sooner! It's so simple!

setback = valet drop off? Tour bus parking? Heli-pad for flybydon?
