Eh, I get the best few from where I work overlooking the Fort Shelby. It is pretty interesting to see what is going on while looking down on the roof of it. It just seems like they have a small crew working there. maybe 20 workers tops. The crew always catcalls and whistles at hot chicks walking by at lunch time. Hilarious.

All the windows are gone, and from the street you can see up into some of the rooms. They're stripping it down to the studs, I think this part of the work is going to take some time.

Dear jeebus it does stink.

Its good to see them come down but I was kinda fond of those trees based on my excursions into the place. Cant wait to see the Fort Shelby restored though.

Regarding "The Cheesecake Factory"

IMHO, there's simply no way a restaurant with the word "factory" in its name can ever be "upscale"

But then again, "upscale" is a sort of cheesy word in an of itself, so maybe it's appropriate after all. ;-)

Would be ironic if they landscaped a patio up there on the Hilton Pick-Fort Shelby and worked into it a tree or two.

not much to report. I walked by it this past friday. I've seen the construction elevator on the fort street side in use quite frequently. seems like their still tearing the guts out.

nothing being done on the outside yet. not even graffiti removal just yet.

"Would be ironic if they landscaped a patio up there on the Hilton Pick-Fort Shelby and worked into it a tree or two."

It's Double Tree, not Hilton (although it's under a division of the Hilton Corporation).

Sort of funny though because I wouldn't consider their chain the "Premiere Choice".

Thanks for bumping this. I couldn't find it when I was adding all my photos yesterday.

I was able to grab a few of the Pick F-S also on 9.28.07:

The second picture Rocket_city posted is a hoot, as it shows one of the old MICHIGAN US-10 / Lodge Fwy. signs. The Lodge has been M-10 since 1987. IIRC, the US-10 designation moved from Woodward to the Lodge in 1973.

Actually, the Lodge became US-10 in 1970 (michiganhighways.org)

Charlottepaul-- It was always US-10 in Midland(at least since the '20s, anyway). When the freeways were built, US-10 was routed in conjunction with I-75 from near Bay City to Dixie Highway, then down Dixie to Telegraph and finally onto the Lodge. Since 1987, US-10 has ended at the I-75 interchange near Bay City.

Before the freeways, US-10 ran on the Dixie all the way from Saginaw to Pontiac, then down Woodward to Detroit.

We watch the renovations with great interest from our windows next door on the fourth floor. They've gutted the insides, right now it looks like they're reinforcing all of the floors. There are lights on all night so you can see quite a bit, even from ground level.

You're lucky, Oldred, I'm stuck on the first floor of my building, so I don't get to see much. Are you on the side of the original Fort Shelby (Comerica) or the 1927 addition (News/Freep)?

This is getting really exciting. I hope they are able to save the marble shoe shine. I got to see that sitting in the basement on my last trek in there and it was really cool.

Wow. I could hardly recognize the basements and lobby area. They have torn out just about every wall. You had to go through several rooms and corridors to find that shoe shine before and now its just in the middle of the room. Hopefully they post some more videos of the work on some of the upper floors and open light well spaces.
