anyone near there or hear anything about it at all? a fire started there @ 3 am allegedly - all they keep showing on tv is just little clips of nothing though...
mostly wondering if any other apartment buildings had to be evacuated nearby?

I just turned on my tv and saw this horrible fire..when they said 1 half block from WSU I immediately thought it might be the Renaud and Touraine, so thanks for clearing that up, Monahan. It is an absolutely massive fire!

What a total loss for that historical apartment. It's people being careless for taking care of their properties.

The top floor is on fire. The trucks woke me up around 5:30am. It looked like about half of the top floor was in flames with two ladders on either "arm" spraying water down on it. In the past hour it looks like the fire has spread more to the southern part of the top floor while the northern part has been mostly contained.

On the news they said arson was suspected, and that it started in one apartment on the 4th floor

The fire has now definitely spread to the third floor. The front area of the southern arm is completely engulfed in flames and there is a serious chance this will spread to the adjacent ABC Building.

TV 2 (Al Allen) just interviewed the owner of the Amsterdam Coffee shop, and she is devastated...she quoted 'I don't know, I have lost everything...I might just move out of Detroit'....

black-atcha!

Five alarms and every firefighter in town is on alert.

This IS huge. Scary stuff.

Heres photos of the building and entryway sculptural reliefs:

http://www.detroitfunk.com/200 5/08/weird_butterfly_girls.htm l

What a drag - the building dates back to 1905. I dated a girl who lived on the top floor of the left "wing" overlooking what used to be Zoots. I used to love hanging out in that bay window watching the street action at night.

The building was rather dirty back in the mid 1990's but well maintained structurally. My friend would sunbathe on the roof, so I was able to hang out up there.

(LeoQueen - remember a model from school named marlo?)

That big of a building that time of night it's a blessing that apparently no one's missing or severely injured

From what I saw on TV it appears the fire damage is contained to the top floors. However, they're pouring so much water on it that the water damage will probably be throughout the structure, not to mention a bunch of smoke damage.

That was a beautiful building. Thanks for the pix. In 1969-70, we lived across the street in that building pictured second to last in that album. It was a home built by JJ Goyette, corset maker, in 1895. We used to look out our third floor windows at the Forest Arms.

Yes it is a shame about the building. But I am appalled that no one has worried about the residents. I personally hope that no one was injured.

no problem.

if amsterdamn coffee is a total loss, i hate to think what the fate of people's records is, as it shares the basement.

this will be quite a blow to that area, and a couple of dedicated detroit entrapeneurs

When I was living in ABC they were slowly replacing all the windows in forest arms, sad a beautiful building. I hear they had a new owner thats why there was some work done on the windows.

I just spoke with my friend.
She is ok but lost everything.
She said a man tried to burn down his apt.
this sucks for all of those residents.
And for Amsterdam and Peoples too.
