Too late; it was already posted in the "Detroit's West Riverfront" thread around 11:00PM last night.

It's like a sleeping giant being awakened. Detroiters out en masse again. There is hope yet.

Took the husband down there last night and had a wonderful time, Joan Jett was so good! But I have to take him down on a regular day because you couldn't see a thing! It was a great day for Detroiters but not so good to see Riverwalk for the first time.

There is something about being on the banks of the mighty straits that put folks in a good mood. Once again, a mellow happy Detroiter day. Maybe it's the way kids laugh when they run through the fountain, maybe it's the light on the water, who knows. It sure worked its mojo on me.

I wonder if the success of the River Walk/RiverDays will speed up riverfront condo sales. Let's sure hope so...

Yes, seeing the kids going nuts running through the fountain made me smile too. I even waved at some people on the boats going by. :-)

Yeah, I'll second Joan Jett on sounding (and looking) great. And, one of the highlights for us was watching the kids on the carousel.

Had some company in from Florida staying at my place downtown, took them over on Friday morning, they loved it, each morning they insisted we walk back to the river and " look at all those cars and the water". They were very impressed, they kept telling me what a difference they see in Detroit from when they were here 5 years ago. They said they cant wait to come back. There was lots of people of all kinds just having a good time.

Three Cheers for the RiverWalk and River Days, no doubt a tremendous success!

Glad to see another grand slam for Detroit that will surely push the rolling momentum of development and re-interest even farther.

However, pragmatically speaking, does anyone feel the River Walk has a novelty that could wear off?
Perhaps people who enjoyed the festival will return on non-festival days and find it lacking?

I sure hope not, but is the RiverWalk a venue that can maintain constant (circumstances considered) interest and activity?

To draw a parallel with Hart Plaza- It's being enjoyed more now, but it's been there awhile and in years past, unless there was an event, visitation seemed sparse. Sure, the layout may negate the comparison but I really really hope the RiverWalk defies my questions.

Also, has enough been built right now, at the time of it's opening to garner that constant interest and enjoyment or will we see a lull in visitation until more is completed, i.e. Condos, Restaurants, Dequindre Cut, etc.?

Love to hear some thoughts, and once again, Hooray for RiverDays!

Great to hear about the River Days.

I have one weird question. Whats access like to the Riverwalk if you don't want to drive down there?

It seems like a far walk to park at one end and say walk the entire riverwalk and back again for some.

Are there any public transit routes really close to the riverwalk that go along its length and are reliable?

East Jefferson Avenue parallels the riverwalk. It is no more than 4 blocks away at it's greatest separation. Jefferson is a primary route in Detroit's bus service. The gaps in the east riverwalk are longer than the largest distance to Jefferson.

You can also access the people mover at Cobo hall, the west end of Joe Louis arena and the Ren-Cen. I can see a walk from the ren-cen to the end of the Joe and a ride back on the people mover becoming very popular.

I was disappointed that I had to walk out to Atwater from Rivard Plaza too get to the Tricentenial State Park. I know of others that were also dissappointed that the riverwalk was not fully connected yet.

Hopefully by the next Riverdays event, Phase II of Tricentennial will be open and provide a couple nice pathways to Rivard Plaza. Phase I of the Dequindre Cut may be open as well. The positive side to opening new segments each year is it spreads out the excitement and keeps the Riverwalk in the media.

It appears that the Riverwalk is going to cost us more than we thought.

Riverfront suit costs Detroit $30M

RiverDays will probably change year after year as the riverfront develops. Already and area that was used this year won't be available if they start building those new condos in front of the Beaubien Place parking deck next year.

I ran the riverwalk from Harbortown to JLA the last 3 days in a row, and I must say that I'm disappointed with the usage between the condos at harbortown and Chene Park. I know its kind of a dead end over there, but I would expect office workers or residents to be using it.

I don't know, it is just a big change from the busy areas of rivard plaza and the civic center areas.

I walked that area this past week as well, Detroitstar. The area behind the UAW-GM Center is nice but too isolated. Personally, the complex is too big for the purpose it serves. This would have been a good spot for another hotel, but when it was built the Riverwalk didn't exist. At any rate, I was the only one walking at the time. The area behind Harbortown was quiet too, but some workers and a couple of young ladies did go down to the boat dock.

Looks like more development in Harbortown, closer to the Riverwalk, could increase foot traffic. Time will tell.

I had dinner at the Rattlesnake last night for dinner for my birthday, it was really good. After my family and I walked around the riverfront a little bit and with the exception of one man fishing it was empty. What a shame...

I agree about the hotel Royce.

Let me put it this way, between Mt. Elliot and Chene in 3 days I saw a total of 6 people (two of which were security guards).

I'm sure that section will get a lot more use once it's connected to the Rivard section.

I wish they could put up at least a temporary connection, but realistically that would be economically wasteful and redundant.

I made a note in my calendar for 2009: Make post on DetroitYes forums about how I miss this trail segment being uncrowded like it was when it first opened. :-)

You guys are thinking too much short term. One can almost guarantee that if Rivard Plaza was connected to the portion starting at Tricentenntial SP to the bridge, that that section would be much more traveled. Not to mention the future growth that entails all of the east riverfront and inland.

The low usage is not a shame. It's an expected part of the growth timetable.

I like the fact that this area is kind of quiet and peaceful, compared to the area behind the ren cen.
