"I'll repeat it here. Is there one person, family, or household that you know of that has been in the northeast Detroit area (along the Morang strip) since its inception in the 40s-50s?"

My grandfather had a house built on Riad in the 40s I think. I remember an old photo of the house and down the block it looked like fields, dirt road etc.

When my mom got married they lived in that house and I grew up there. Lived there until 1993 when I married and we got a house by Balduck park.
Those early 90s are when I really noticed the acceleration of the neighborhood declining, like the good ol' businesses closing, many houses for sale, and crime. Besides the burglars and car thefts I could hear the gunshots night after night in the distance and if I were standing on Morang and Riad it sounded like they were coming somewhere from Denby to 7 and Hayes area.

One of my sisters however is still in the area, she lives on Laing between Moross and Casino.

7K,
If my memory serves me correctly that elm tree served as the "not it" tree when playing tag.

Gistok,

I didn't know Ben and June... the only time I hung out on the dead end there was to watch the fireworks every July 4th when I was a kid and oh yeah, when I still attended Carleton Elementary ('76-'81) I played with a kid who lived over there every once and a while, forget his name but I remember his brother who was very overweight was named Tony.

KR: The Fordham Gang was indeed a very mild group...we specialized in walking little ol' ladies across the street. The Mapleridge Mob however, was a group to avoid at almost all costs...they were noted for snow face washes...stealing from neighborhood apple trees, and later for def_____ing any number of sweet young things on the NEside...they were a really reprehensible collection of nere-do-wells!

Grumpy: She would have graduated from Denby about '61...but might you have known a family in the Carleton area by the name of Jensen? Sally was my prom date in '59...have wondered what became of her.

GB - right after the prom Sally J lived at various houses on Mapleridge between Brock and Morang with some of the MMob boys.......kind of a sharing plan....she cried uncontrolled for over a month and kept mumbling something about a white FORD convert and "He had a princeton....he had a princeton and a barracuda jacket" .she later became a nun and is living in Traverse City.

I'd forgotten about the barracuda jacket of the 60's-80's...God that was a cool jacket...plaid lining and all. Your apparel sounds so very...so very...well...what can I say...so Grosse Pointeish...I thought you lived in hip San Jose! Please tell us that you're not attending the game sans socks and with penny loafers!

Mikem, very interesting factoid about Morang being called 7 Mile when Moross was not a completed street in the 30's.

We used to occasionally tell strangers (unfamiliar with the east side) that Morang and by connection, Cadieux Rd. were an extension of "6 Mile", since they followed pretty closely the continuation of Seymour Ave., the street that 6 Mile (McNichols) turns into east of Gratiot.

My first job (1969-74) was as a bagger and later cashier at the Morang & Kelly Chatham Store (#8). My first manager was Mike Summers, and our head cashier was Helen Mazzola, who's son Chris Mazzola has been mentioned on other east side threads as belonging to an east side rock band.

I can't remember the name of that red bricked drive thru car wash that was on Morang, but it had the best floral landscaping of any car wash I've ever seen! That owner really took pride in keeping that place nicely landscaped with a lot of flowers and bushes.

I think my Barracuda jacket (with plaid lining) is in the bottom of my mother's cedar chest...along with my Nehru jacket and TAR letter sweater.

That would be a good chapter...I'll write about the Cuda jacket and Izod shirts with chinos...you can write about your pegged pants with padded shoulder jacket and greasy ducktail...KR & 7K can write about rolled up jeans and white shirts with ties. We need a woman from the era to write about kilts and saddle shoes.

ES: My class INVENTED the collegiate look...princeton haircut, Barracuda jacket, chino pants, Izod shirt...or a button down madras long sleeve shirt...plus loafers with tassels! Everyone knew that the Mapleridge crowd was a bunch of Elvis wannabes...except for the one's who thought they were hip in Nehru jackets and bell bottom pants!

GB - I think that you have been smokin' "cloud 9" stuff again....The 61 class was the totally collegiate class - the 59 class i do remember had 14 guys out of the 3000 who attended DHS who did get their princeton haircut, Cuda jacket and loafers........I hated the rock salt that ruined my loafers over the years in Motown......were you number 15 or 2985....I can't remember.....

ES: If there was ANYONE in '61 who had gone collegiate it was PURELY due to the influence of those of us who had gone before...paving the way...showing how it was to be done...selling elevator passes, etc.

ES: JR always demanded a percentage of the sales of hall passes...generally I was able to negotiate him down to 10% but then he upped the price of a signed package of the passes...the guy was a real racketeer...again, here I was...a private business man trying to earn a living and having to deal with the bureaucracy.

SR....ah, yas...sweet SR.
