One of Detroit's best and oldest schools; a list of famous alumni that rivals Cass Tech. NW Colt athletic teams consistently ranked among the toughest in Michigan. Please share your memories! (Message edited by chuckjav on March 04, 2008) |

Never went there. But I used to park next to the power house when I went to Red Wings games at the Olympia. Spooky, but I feared no evil. |

Ray1936....What I remember most about NWHS, was the wide open spaces and athletic fields surrounding the school. Wasn't there a WWII-era anti-aircraft machine gun on the property? |

It was a World War I gun with the breech removed. During the turbulent riot years of the late sixties, the students painted it red, green, and black. |

I attended the Big N.O. later in the 80's, but I remember as a kid when the Old Building was on the corner of Grand River and West Grand Blvd(now stands a 3.5 million dollar Church)....The school was like a small campus(I believe a long time ago, the school use to be a college of some sort.) It had 4 different buildings plus Mc Michael Middle School...the Mar building,(Math, and Business), the C Building(General Studies), the B building,(Physical Education and Music) and the A building(Science,Sex Ed. and Auto Mechanics, Wood-shop etc.) There was a time when students had to walk through a tunnel (if one was brave enough)...most students, for safety, walked around the perimeter to the A and B buildings. The tunnel connected the C building to the A and B Building on the Corner of the Blvd and Lawton. There was often a negative story which added to the legacy of the notorious Northwestern 'tunnel'. I can remember my brother many times telling me about a stick-up or gang-fight in the notorious 'tunnel'. Northwestern, the Mighty C-O-L-T-S, was/is known for a brilliant English Department, Music Department, Sports teams...particularly Basketball, Volley ball, and Swimming blksoul-atcha! |
