Exmotowner, Just go in dressed like a slob and tell them you're in town to do an exclusive interview with Michael Jackson for Rolling Stone magazine.

Hey Don, Great idea! LOL I was up there over memorial day (for the first time in 10 years) and was VERY proud of what I seen in the city overall. Yes it has its bad spots, and Im not a big KK supporter, but hes done a great job downtown! I never felt safer downtown, and it has NEVER and I mean NEVER been cleaner! Hope it infects the rest of the city and people there start to care more. The BOOK project is AWSOME!

Threadjack alert. Of interest to DYes folks observing the rebirth of the Book Cadillac might be the reopening earlier this year of the Skirvin Hilton in Oklahoma City. Long the premier hotel in that city, it followed a path of decline eerily similar to the BC before it closed in 1988. The $55 million project is smaller than the BC to be sure, but it has been a glorious restoration that has excited that city. Story and pictures:

They've begun to put up the facade on the Washington Blvd side of the addition, and they've started re-installing the decorative ballisters/ballistrade, whatever it's called. Those things that look like balconies. Beautiful.

I'll take some pictures when I get out of work and try to post them sometime tonight.

Scale wise, it's seems more comparable to the Fort Shelby renovation. Similar price and size!

Looking forward to your pics, Saintme. The term is "balustrade." Each individual piece is a "baluster."

Great building. It has a lot of that "grandeur" I was talking about. Obviously, the building was sealed pretty well and didn't have to be gutted like the Book. It sure looks big to only have 225 rooms and no condos. I like the $139.00 weekend rate.

There were originally over 400 rooms at the Skirvin, some of which were of the tiny closet variety common to hotels of the era such as the Hilton in Detroit.

Drove by the Book-Caddy today and noticed they were installing window frames on some of the lower floors (3 and 4, I think). It's really coming together. The new ballroom and pool area is beginning to come together, too. It's going to be amazing!

Some of the facade on the addition is up, I have to say I'm impressed with the quality. Looks like it'll match the original building beautifully.

Other than a Starbucks, the identities of the restaurants have not yet confirmed. I believe that Chris Ferchill said that they hope to announce them later this month.

On a related note, here is a B-C video that ran on Tuesday on Fox 2 News.

Don't know if this is going to make this evenings news, but I drove passed the site around six this evening and it looks like a crain used to build the parking structure(the Griswold) toppled over.

Thought maybe Kwame was going to announce another refinancing tonight to save the Caddy and his job but it's just a bump to remind us of happier times.

Thank god the project is far along. If it was in the very early scoping out stage by the developer, the text message fiasco might have scared him off.

I heard from someone that their might be a Cheesecake Factory Restaurant added to it. Be cool to see one downtown. Any word on the actual date they'll be opening the place up?

The goal is still Oct. 1 but the Starwood Hotels website states opening is Nov. 1. I plan my stay to coincide with a Tiger playoff game and my 20th anniversary so I'm hoping the stars align and both sides don't screw up!

Starwood is the parent company of Westin (and Sheraton, too).

Well, sorry to say that the new November 1st projected opening info on the Starwood site is the first confirmed delay of the project since it was announced by the Ferchill Group in June 2006. For the past nine months, the Starwood site had listed October 1st as the grand opening date.

http://www.starwoodhotels.com/ westin/property/overview/index .html?propertyID=3001

Of course those delays are commonplace - and one month isn't the end of the world - but I was hoping that this project would somehow do the impossible and suffer no delays.

I think 1924 is the correct date.
