Ah - I suppose with a RAW you could adjust the range in post production in order to make several 'exposures' too.

Southen, you mostly shoot night stuff ?

Thats a great angle of MCS you got shooting from upstairs toward the front btw.

So far the craziest MCS photo Ive seen was taken by ForgottenMich dude. He crawled up on TOP of the ceiling, and stuck his camera through one of the chandelier holes and took a shot of us standing in one of the arches upstairs. Id be afraid to fall through the damn ceiling, but hes lots skinnier than me !

A lot of the recent vandalism was done by the hollywood folks. During 'The Island', one of their guys painted shit all over the city, and especially up on the roof of MCS. They also busted out lots of windows while shooting that one.

Hi Mauser,

I've seen that shot as well. I'm pretty skinny, but I would not risk poking my camera through that hole. I would not want to fall through the roof and go splat, either.

It's a shame so much vandalism has been done by people in MCS over the past 20 years. January 5, 2008 marked twenty years since the last train left MCS.

Yeah those shots through the hole in the ceiling are nuts. Ive been back that way to see the dome supports but I wouldnt dare go up there, im too much of a chicken.

My first trek into the station was in march of 2005 there was some vandalism but not horrible. I went back for my second trip in November of 07 and I was blown away by how much vandalism there was. Made me really sad.

Heres my MCS set, which has quickly become my favorite on flickr.

I really love your MCS set. The fog was really a photographic bit of luck, as it added a lot to the shots, and gives yours a uniqueness not found elsewhere. Given the pace of vandalism, I'd really like to get back to Detroit again soon and possibly make a photo visit, because who knows how the condition will around in another few years?

Very cool areas in MCS way in the back and in the basements and under the tracks. Not real safe though, and some areas in the basement you can only get through if the water is frozen deep enough. Customs and postal areas are toward the back. Everybody shoots the waiting room - understandably.

Hey Southen and everybody else - what are you shooting with ? I thought I read you were using a D70 or D50 ? I use a D80 and I just bought a D300 for work. The D300 is a monster. Sold my old lenses and Im replacing them all with the newer VR versions which are badass.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi (400D) that I bought about seven months ago. Unfortunately, I have not had many opportunities to use it in the last few months, besides holiday snapshots. I wish I were in Detroit so I could come along on Exposure Detroit's outings!

The D300 seems like a great camera, so good luck with it, Mauser!

Ryan, your pics are awesome, as ever!

That tour of the off-limit remains of the Michigan Theatre is still on hold. But I told building owner Tony Pieroni that you are one of the folks I would like to give that tour to.

But if someone (me) with no photo skills whatsoever can take a nice picture of the interior of the Michigan's great false window (below)... it boggles the mind what you can do by taking your own pics of this amazing space...

Well, I didn't save it, it was taken from the depot long before I acquired it, but I'm glad it was saved as well.

There really isn't a bad photo posted on this thread at all! For one who has been away for over twenty years, it's a good feeling to see all these shots.

Thanks to all who have posted. I've thoroughly enjoyed every angle and every exposure. And keep 'em coming!

Wow, I had to dig for this thread....

Can anyone tell me what building this is? It's at Grand River and Prairie. People have asked me and my only response is "der...I dunno."

Took this last summer from the Ovation yacht. Was looking through my camera and rediscovered it. I like how the bridge and the Boblo boat are in the shot.

I was on a tour of the Masonic Temple recently, really an amazing place. Id suggest taking a tour if you ever get a chance, lots of history there. Any heres a shot I took from inside the theater that I think turned out well.

Those MCSs are sweet. I never spend enough time in there to take proper photos - I get jittery because I almost always explore alone.

D200 is a great camera - the D300 offers no real improvements unless you shoot a lot of sports. I shoot sports quite often for work (i dont watch any sports personally) so its a must have. It has an incredible matrix feature for tracking moving objects and keeping them metered and focused.

It also has a focus button SEPARATE from the shutter button. Did it take a genius somewhere to figure that out ? What an improvement.

The VR lenses are very cool. They allow handheld shots that are as sharp as tripod shots in many situations. And at the very least, allow you to hand hold at lower shutter speeds. For moving objects (sports) or tripod shots VR is useless.

Great work as always Southen. The Masonic is a trip.
