I took a few pix of the stadium last Friday but only yesterday remembered I had some slides from Lions game when it was known as Briggs Stadium. Wish I had remembered and looked at these before going there as I would have duplicated the same angle. These were taken October 9, 1960 when the Lions played SF. This chapter in the stadiums history is seldom mentioned so I attach an inside view as well.

Great photos, Richie! Thanks for sharing. I went down today and took some photos of the demolition. Even climbed a few fences to get the angles I wanted. Will upload and post a few of them soon! |

Richie--Would you be willing to allow a group of us putting together a book of now-and-then photos of the stadium to use the top image? We love that funky green. At this point all we can offer is a credit line and a free copy of the book. |

In the 1960 photo, check out the women in full business dress and her date in a suit to go to a baseball game. As I am fond of saying, times have changed, what? |

Thanks! I didn't know that The Corner wasn't always open like it is now. I still think some sort of cafe there would be kewl. Maybe take down the fence (or leave it up, depending on how it's used). At the very least I hope they keep the ticket counter with some sort of plaza or sitting area. I also didn't realize that football was played there (until it was mentioned here, not to long ago). It's strange to see the football field in Tiger Stadium. PS Edit: The road looks like it's not in much better of shape too? There was black top over the bricks way back in 1960 already? Wow! Jcole, I thought it was a football game against SF. That would probably be a Sunday. Yet you are correct. Women used to wear white gloves while shopping at Downtown Hudson's. Now we have discussions about the interim Chief of Police in Flint, threatening to arrest children who can't wear their pants above their underwear. Insane. I'd "pants" them if I didn't fear getting shot by their "brother". Pull up your damn pants! |

JV, you are more than likely correct about the game, but you still wouldn't see anybody dressed like that today to go to any game. Seldom see them that dressed up to go to a wedding anymore I totally agree with you about the 'Saggy Pants' issue. It looks so stupid. So does the new one where women wear their low slung jeans with their thong hanging out. I spent most of my adult life trying to hide a bra strap, and they WANT their underwear to show?? |

So you two don't approve of the new trend... which I regret to say, is becoming popular in our suburbs? Link: http://digg.com/arts_culture/S exy_Bikini_Pants_Combine_Low_C ut_Jeans_With_A_String_Bikini I don't ger it either... I have actually seen and known ladies (one in her mid twenties) actually wearing something like these in public... it was at a bowling alley in Canton (The one with the party store attached... I think. Is it on Cherry Hill Road?). It's strange how much things can change (and how fast). I personally blame my fellow guys for approving of this sort of thing, but that's just me. Of course, I'm no expert... my wardrobe hasn't had any new additions for awhile... God, now I want to go shopping. LOL! PS Edit: I take back blaming me fellow guys. I really just blame Sisqo and his dang "Thong Song". (Message edited by Sean_of_Detroit on July 12, 2008) |

Now, that is just ridiculous. If I dared try to wear that, I would have one hand on my bra strap and one hand on my ass at all times in fear of losing my pants. I sure wouldn't get much done. |

I was down there today, got some brick pavers from the plaza. Notice how the infield was filled in with grass instead of being left dirt ala Candlestick. |

Same thing here in the Las Vegas casinos. Forty years back, everyone wore a suit and tie into a strip joint (watch the original "Ocean's Eleven" for verification!). Today, anything goes. Sigh. |

OK, I was going to buy one for my brother, but he ain't worth $400. He'll have to inherit it from me since I'm worth $400. Steve at Detroit Athletic Co. says it's in UPS and we'll be here Monday. Looks as good as the picture. http://www.detroitathletic.com /servlet/the-251/Original-Tige r-Stadium-Padded/Detail?sfs=44 cda400 I guess I'll have to set it up for the All-Star game. |

Great Briggs pix, Richie. As mentioned on previous posts, my dad was a Lions season ticket holder(Sec 34 Row D Seats 1&2 Upper Deck). That translated to right field line. Saw a lot of Lions greats at Briggs including Bobby Layne. Attended the 57 championship game w/dad(I was on cloud 9). Going to miss Tiger/Briggs Stadium. Another piece of my Detroit childhood gone. |

I brought the camera in and took some shots yesterday 7/10. Here is a composite of five shots together. Also, I have another shot where you can see bleachers tossed on the ground. I was lucky enough to grab a 4-foot section for $100 last October, but c'mon let me in there for like 15 minutes to grab some more! ;) -- Tim

Mortgageking, the oldest is 20, she has pants that don,t fit. But she loves Tiger Stadium, she,s in denial, says the demo isn,t happening. If she were in charge of saving the place everyone would just leave it standing and lock her in there. I never saw the Lions play at the corner, goes back to all the stories i hear about old Detroit, If i get down there this week gotta drag the girl with me. As for pix of the foot ball games she won,t look at any picks of the Stadium to hard for her. BUT then again pictures of the ballpark take up a good portion of my basement bar area.Go figure. |

Sean, i think the bowling alley you were talking about is Fiesta Lanes in Westland, ya know some people can wear some types of clothes yet others just don,t need to be seen out in public like that.Got an old poster of Gordie Howe, in the background you can men in suits and women in dresses, glad i grew up when you can wear jersey,s to games. |

outta curiosity whats the overnight security like at the corner right now? Totally not a legit question to ask here I know but its for personal nostalgia not sellin things online and what not. I need a piece of a catwalk for sure. As a kid watched many games from the upper deck bleachers when my uncle couldn't "buy" lower deck seats from an usher with a fiver in the palm of a good handshake. Good times. One of the most memorable moments was at around age 7 @ Lafayette Coney. I was told by my normally cordial uncle NEVER under any circumstances to go Effin' next door (to American) and to ALWAYS get a coney with the works, a coke (or beer in his case) and nothing else. I was all for the demo (progress) until I saw (in person) the first hole ripped. Then it all came rushing back. Like buyers remorse I wish I could go back and watcha game @ the corner. The rotting hulk suddenly seems a better idea than a empty lot. Ill expect what I will dub the "Hudson's Effect" on Tiger Stadium. Allota people (including corktown residents) yelling for demo. And then when its gone... stunned silence, sadness and a hint of regret. |

My father told me a story of going to a Lions game during the Depression. 1931 or so. He went with his father and uncle. At the time, his father was unemployed but his uncle was working at his grandfather's printing co. Dad asked uncle Fred to buy him a 5-cent hot dog, and the bastard said "No". To make up for that, I bought the tickets, drove, a couple lemonades and bratwurst at Comerica. His eyes were so bad he kept trying to use the ladies room after the game. I had to grab him and point him into the right direction. He passed quickly last Feb. That's what he and Mom wanted. |

I stopped by the Royal Oak art fair yesterday and should mention that Paul Adams has a fantastic print made from one of his paintings available showing Briggs in the mid 1950's. The detail is absolutely phenomenal. Get one if you can. Paul has lots of other Detroit subjects and for the most part paints the Detroit he knew as a kid in the 1950's. He is now painting a series of Divco milk trucks in the colors of the various area dairies. Richard_bak You are more than welcome to use the picture for your book, I have loaned out lots of pictures over the years for just this purpose. (Still waiting for Chirnside's "Aquitania" book to come out) I would assume you can contact me through Lowell. I have also have some slides of a game taken in the 1950's but not sure where I put them at the moment but as I recall they were not real sharp. About a year ago a seller on ebay had a bunch of slides showing some sort of religious gathering there in the 1960's. Never saw any other reference to this event but the place was packed (And I was outbid on them). Dittman, great first hand account of the place. Tigerfan, I do have a high res scan but do not let these out in public domain (I sell prints made from a lot of historic and modern images). |

Here is an old postcard of Briggs. It is not a very clear printing. From the cars the picture appears to have been taken about 1950 and published at that time. It has always struck me as odd that there were so few cards issued of the stadium. A big void for sure as the next cards I know of are a few aerial views published in the 80's & 90's so there were several decades you could not purchase a postcard of the stadium. There is an earlier aerial postcard published as Navin Field I once had but traded it for something else a few years ago. I guess this is not so bad considering there appears to be none published of Olympia in any decade, a true oddity because in the postcard era cards were published by of everything but it would seem Detroit stadiums.

I'm almost positive this PC shows Briggs Stadium as it was "dressed up" for the 1951 All-Star Game, an event moved from Philadelphia to Detroit to coincide with Detroit's 250th birthday celebration that July. |
