"I Dont Think So - Gore Gore Girls"

I played/sang on that recording :-) It's a cover.

Here are my favorites:

"Vegas" by The Paybacks
"Lucifer" by Bob Seger System
"Evil" by Cactus
"1000 Cigarettes" by Bill Parker & His Motherscratchers
"Pope on a Rope" by The Meatmen
"At Her Feet" by Octopus
"77 Burnout" by 500 Ft. of Pipe
"Oh Severed Head" by Ghost City
"Below the Sun" by Wolfbait
"19" by Chapstik
"Shelby Township" by Dead Bodies
"It's Raining" by Detroit Cobras
"McDonaldz" by Electric Six
"Crawl" Laughing Hyenas
"Monster" by the Muggs

Oh it goes on and on -- there's too many! I listen to mostly local bands, so it's hard to pick.

Adrenaline as a joke? Bite your tongue!
Those guys put out some of the best local live shows every time I saw 'em!
(a LOT of times, BTW)
Me & my buddy Dave did some road-signage theft out in Farmington, gave the band a "Freedom Rd." sign one night at Harpo's, ended up doing the after-show party all-night thing with the band & friends..say what you will 'bout Adrenaline, they had some purty groupies!
:-)

Whatever happened to 'em? I seem to recall the lead singer doing the "rehab/found Jesus" thing shortly before they dropped off my radar, but I may be confuzzled about that..

Zrx_doug, I knew the Pastoria brothers from Adrenaline when I was in High School and I used to get a kick out of them when they would go to church at St. Joan's in their "rock star" clothes. I guess they run this recording studio now http://www.harmoniepark.com/ It says that Mark Pastoria recently won a Grammy working with Aretha Franklin which is pretty cool. I know their cousin who recorded there under the name DC PAC as a Christian rapper.

That this is so impossible is a testament to how great Detroit is. Five current favorites:

The Stooges - 1969
White Stripes - Death Letter
Tyvek - Air Conditioner
The Dirtbombs - Motor City Baby
The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist

Just about anything - from the loud-rock group known as FORGE - will blow your phucking mind.
Check 'em out on i-tunes; specifically, the albums: "Trials" & "Bring on the Apocalypse"

These four Detroiters are well-schooled with regard to THE ROCK...that you so desperately crave.

Ct_alum, Search and Destroy is from the Raw Power LP by Iggy and the Stooges, which had 3 of the 4 original members of the Stooges on it. Dave Alexander had passed. Raw Power is considered a Stooges album, not an Iggy album. I would consider The Idiot to be the first Iggy album since it had no other Stooges in it, except for Iggy.

Please excuse the tardiness of my appearance here, but I must point out, to Saintme, that Stevie Wonder is not responsible (or to blame) for "She's A Bad Mama Jama." Carl Carlton gets the credit for that one, although some of us feel that he should be fined, not credited, for it.
I am pleased to see that a couple of my favorites, "Loose" and "Lucifer" (a pairing which, I am only now noticing, has a homonymicity to it,) repeatedly appear in this thread.
And, a thumbs-up to Ct_alum for mentioning Savage Grace's "Lady Rain."

Elimarr: Yes! Funkadelic - Testify!. The hair on my arms stood up when I saw your post and remembered the song. Too much!

I'll never forget when I think it was Dave Schaefer on CKLW played "I Was Made to Love Her" and when it was over said "If that doesn't get to you there's something wrong with you!" So true..............

A couple of other favorites by the Temps:

You're My Everything (Eddie Kendricks lead)
Get Ready (Eddie Kendricks lead)
Cloud 9 (Dennis Edwards lead)
I'm Gonna Make You Love Me - Temps & Supremes

Anything by the MC5, too bad they and the Stooges were so mismanaged by Elektra Records. I guess that they didn't know how to deal with what was being laid down by the 5 and Iggy.

I remember being kicked out of Driver's Ed at Osborn because I had a White Panther Party button on my jacket.........

I've seen a couple of "The Tears of a Clown" mentions, but I am personally a fan of Smokey's other great "Tears" hit, "The Tracks of My Tears"

John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillen" (my usernamesake) is a dandy.

Lately I can't get enough of Rodriguez's "I Wonder".

Arthur Alexander's "Detroit City"- This song is all about the Great Migration. Dig these lyrics:
"Home Folks think I'm big in Detroit City
From the letters that I write, they think I'm fine.
But by day I make the cars, by night I make the bars
If they could only read between the lines."

I could name so many more...

This is a great thread. Lots of great bands mentioned, but a lot of them are classics (even the newer rock bands mentioned are mostly from 5-10 years ago). Here's a short list of my favorite Detroit bands that are more "now."

Millions of Brazilians
Love Meets Lust
Casket Bastards
Friendly Foes (playing the Belmont this Friday 11/14!)
Ghost City (broke up too soon, but get the CD)
The Muggs
Bluesong (incredible stoner rock/blues)
Aquarius Void
Octopus (playing the Belmont 11/29)
Back in Spades (reuniting at Small's 12/19)
Lola Morales
Prussia
Hard Lessons
Matt Truman Ego Trip (from Bowling Green, but there's a Detroit connection)
Friends of Dennis Wilson
I, Crime

Just to name a few... check 'em out!

For more local music, listen to Riff2 every Tuesday night from 10 p.m. to midnight. You can listen on an HD radio (101.1 HD2) or online at www.riff2.com!!

Melody mentioned Bluesong above. Here's a performance video of them playing a tune from my list. Put the video on full screen and it's almost like being there. They could groove on that bass line for daze.

So, of course, no "M" as she is from Pontiac. If only the rest of the world savvy that. LOL

Very cool to hear about Mark Pastoria. I knew Brian a lot better; I used to work with him summers at the linen company. His uncle worked there and so did my mom. Good Italian kids like us weren't allowed to screw off all summer. Make that money! But, we still managed to have fun. A lot.

I knew the Bitter Sweet Alley guys too; I wrote a story on them for "The South End" when I was at WSU. (Also wrote one on Adrenalin, too.) Bill Pilupchuk, BSA's keyboard player went there too, I'd see him on campus quite a bit. He used to have this fabulous long black coat and a Beatles haircut. He was an art major, I think. I remember Gary Spagnola, too.

So, no slamming these guys in my presence. I have a lot of respect for artists, esp. the ones who work and/or go to school, and still do their music, too. A lot.

Downriviera:
Your mention of "No Pills" brought a smile. I had a love/hate thing for Torpedos, then Reputations.
On their best nights, they were fantastic. Other nights, a train wreck.
I liked "Pop Star" even more.....
First met Johnny Angelos at the Red Roach Cafe, on Plum Street. Sad ending, later.

i just learned today that bob seger was once producer for a detroit-local band called "the mushrooms," and created a strong friendship with one of the group's members. this musician moved on from the mushrooms and co-wrote a song with seger that reached #1: "heartbreak tonight." the musician, of course, is glen frey of the eagles, who is a royal oak dondero grad...i just learned all this today!

i'm sure many of you scene-sters already knew that, but it was cool for me to find out!

There was an amazing amount of community in the rock music scene of Detroit in those days. Numerous bands formed and morphed, exchanging members and fans. There is a website, called My First Band, that chronicles amateur rock bands from the sixties. There are more entries from Michigan than any other state.
The huge potential of the Detroit scene imploded dramatically with the introduction of hard drugs.

....Bobl, I hate to disagree, but I think it was a shortage of hair pomade that started the downfall. Remember Emmanuel Lasky?

Forge is fantastic and for all who weren't aware, they are now called Decibilt and play 80's rock. Check it out.

My favorite Detroit music days were back when Forge played in the late 90's/early 2000's. Other good local bands at the time were Arizing, One Degree Off, The Sicks, Factory 81, Taproot. I was in a band that played with most listed above. We were called Killswytch and later changed our name to Odious.

A good DJ. Saw him play as Terry Knight & The Pack at the Grande, complete with painted face! Dave (?) the announcer was not sure of the reaction, and asked if the audience wanted them back. Some replied positively, many were quiet.
Next thing I remember, seems like just weeks later, Grand Funk was playing LOUDLY, and soon became LARGE. I couldn't figure out why they became so big, while bands that I thought were much better were ignored.
I thought Jagged Edge was the next big thing!
