All- For those of you who have never met Ms McPhail I understand she is going to be at the Cafe de Troit on the 30th of March from 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Ms Lee Pagett (forgive me if I am spelling it wrong) had a brochure and some flyers on her shelf yesterday when I was there for some of her excellent coffee. I cannot be there (so Metro if go you won't see me) I am out of town for work. I encourage you to meet with her. AND heaven forbid if Freman does not make it past the primary you will be at least informed of what she has to offer. Thank you |

Will she be making a formal speech, regarding her plans for the city if she is elected? Or is it more of a meet and greet type event? PS.EAP,you are welcomed to proofread) |

I don't know the flyer said Meet and Greet. Although she typically does a speech and takes questions from the audience. You should. Sometimes folks get so caught up in rumors that they need to see for themselves. I can guarantee that 90% will walk out (if they have never met Sharon) with a positive attitude on her. |

Another sweeping generalization with your astounding skills at gauging crowds. Did you take a formal poll to reach your 90% figure? Or is that another assumption made to pump up your candidate? |

Um, even rookie, would-be journalists are taught how to estimate crowd size. . . . It ain't that hard. So, aside from sniping the opposition, anything to add, aram? Anything from personal experience or observation from, you know, time spent in Detroit? Or are you armchairing this one from the suburbs? Are you even of age to vote these days? |

I can vote, by the way. I've voted in four elections already, FYI. But to assume that "90%" of a group will come away from a McPhail rally and have a positive attitude. It's impossible to look at someone, or even a group of people, and come to such a conclusion. |

It's the 10% who might stay to argue with her that would be easy to spot...unless we discount a few percent for those there to keep peace. |

Student council elections don't count. As for the 90%, take it with a grain of salt and welcome to the partisan politics of non-partisan elections in Detroit and live a little. 'Course, if you did vote here, you might have a sense of humor about the process. Enjoy the armchair politics. . . and won't see ya' at the polls. |

ILD, you are right on the predictions of 90%. I also guarantee that and would even go higher. The only folks who after meeting Sharon would not support Sharon are those persons who have committed to supporting an opponent. Before Cafe, come out to Belle Isle Tomorrow. I'll be there. Belle Isle Saturday! Come to the Belle Isle Aquarium this Saturday (opens at 10:00 am) American's oldest aquarium! The current administation has pledged to close this beautiful gem of Detroit. At 12:30 PM Sharon McPhail plans to share with the folks who love Belle Isle her vision for development of the island. WHAT: Come out and support the aquarium and hear Sharon's plan. WHEN: Saturday, March 26 at 12:30 PM WHERE: The Belle Isle Aquarium is located on Belle Isle just two miles east of downtown Detroit. Entrance to the island is on E. Jefferson at E. Grand Blvd. The Aquarium is at the intersection of Inselruhe Avenue and Loiter Way. |

I did not mean to imply ALL 500 were there for Sharon...there were many, many people there to see the Aquarium (suburbs and Detroiters) that the good folks from FOBIA are generating interest on. Please don't think I am taking away from them...that would not be the case here. Amelia - I would love to have actually met a KK supporter - you are more rare than some of the fish in the aquarium! |

I think it's hilarious that Sharon has a plan for keeping the Belle Isle Aquarium open. Here's her plan: Sharon will require the casinos to subsidize all costs associated with the Aquarium. Of course this will mean 2 dozen DPS students will lose their 4-year college casino scholarships. |

In all budgets from the current CC the Belle Isle aquarium has been fully funded. KK has changed the budget but the CC was unable to over ride KK's veto. You need six votes to over turn the veto. What is KK doing with the money saved from closing the Belle Isle Zoo? |

Morena- I am sorry you are a sad person for making fun of someone who is trying to save some of the heritage of our great city. Below is a story that was forwarded to me from a member FOBIA the group that is trying to save the aquarium. Maybe this will make you realize how foolish the actions of the mayor are. One weekend day I was at the Aquarium and walked thru it talking with an African-American Detroiter named Paul. Paul was with his family including his two year old grandson, whom he was carrying in his right arm. As we walked around the Aquarium which was full of people we taked about the many reasons why it was a big mistake to close a place of such great beauty enjoyed by so many people to save such a tiny part of the City's total budget deficit ($385,000 out of a projected 230,000,000). As we were approaching the last few of the Aquarium's exhibits, Paul looked at me and then at his grandson. Paul said, "do you see this guy? I'm 44 years old. I can remember coming here with my grandparents when I was his age. You just don't close a place like this." Moments later Paul looked at three little white girls who were looking at the exhibit immediately to our left. They were leaning over the railing, pointing at the fish, getting as close as they could, talking, laughing, and smiling. Paul then looked at me and said, "do you see that? Do you know what that is? That's curiousity. That's imagination. That's education. That leads to inspiration and innovation. Who knows? One of those kids might be inspired to become a marine biologist by coming here." A few moments later, Paul then swept his free left arm around, gesturing at the hundreds of people touring the Aquarium, mostly families from 2 to 92, people in wheelchairs, and couples and individuals, all enjoying the Aquarium's beautiful exhibits. He then said, "you see all these people? You know what's happening to these people? They are being robbed. That's what." I wish I had all that recorded somewhere other than in my mind. |

Thanks Aram.... The sad part on the closing is that what I wrote above is beyond true. I honestly had never gone to the aquarium until this past fall. It really is beautiful. When I was there this fall it was dead. Today it was packed full of Detroiters and suburbanites. It was nice to see us uniting over something. Today was a good day to feel proud for my city and (don't gag anyone) but for my candidate who stood up for the aquarium. |

Would that Clown Fish be the same as Nemo? Sharon McPhail will get the family vote with that news. Please go and tell everyone! While I was at the Aquarium today all the kids called it Nemo by sight. Its my favorite fish too. A harmless cute little fish that lives around a dangerous animal and is smart enough to not get eaten while all the other fish get eaten. Go Nemo! |

Brian: Too bad kids can't vote. Besides, the Mayor and Dr. Kagan has already hinted at a new state-of-art downtown aquarium that will include sharks as in Shark Tale's and families will love him. BTW: Why didn't Sharon go down to the Belle Isle Zoo last year and do the same dog-n-pony show when the Mayor announced he was closing it? Maybe it was because the '05 election was still some time away. |

Well if Sharon went down to the aquarium last year it must have did some good becuase the aquarium is still open. As for your tale of a new aquarium, how is it going to be paid for if the deficit is as high as KK claims? That will win votes, cut city services, lay off people and build a new aquarium that isn't needed and can't pay for itself. |

Brian: Come on, you know I said Belle Isle Zoo. Where was she at when the Council put in the budget and the Mayor still closed it? Why wasn't she out there sharing her plan to keep the Belle Isle Zoo open? Instead, she and her colleagues filed a lawsuit and lost in court. BTW: That lawsuit was paid for by the citizens of this city just like all the lawsuits she files and loses. Taxpayers should be outraged. |

She and the rest of the CC did share her plan. The mayor rejected the plan and closed the zoo. Where is the money saved from closing the zoo on the island? The money used to pay for the animals and staff should have been available to spend elsewhere. Where did it go? |

From the article in today's Detroit News, it sounds like citizens, not Sharon, are the one's coming up with ideas for keeping the Aquarium open. http://www.detnews.com/2005/me tro/0503/27/B04D-130125.htm Okay, Sharonites, your turn. |

Brian: You should get out more often and see the real world. or, putting it another way - without a vision the people perish. Sure there are deep emotions connected to this issue [some are actually tear-jerking, i mean "Nemo" ]. What's next, are you taking this to Oprah? But, seriously when will those who want to lead this city start really thinking ahead for this city. Why do people downgrade Detroit, leave and head to other cities? Look at this project in Atlanta. Brian, the questions "who will pay for it?" and "Will it make money?" can be answered. Detroit had Max Fisher, but he is gone. Atlanta has great citizens with BIG plans for its city. Can you fishheads see a bigger and better Detroit for us as well? My family is in Atlanta, grandchildren and all. Maybe this is why ... THE FUTURE |

Amelia - You ask why people are leaving? It is because of things like closing the aquarium. It all just starts adding up...poor schools, bad city services, pot holes, high taxes...at some point the pot boils over and you got to take it off the burner. In Detroit no one has taken it off the burner and it just keeps boiling so people get fed up and leave. I love it hear and I don't want to be the last one to leave. Sharon's plans for Belle Isle are simple...she spoke about them yesterday. I am not going to repeat them all here but some were simple and low cost. Some ideas were more over time. But she is doing what she can (remember we have 5000 things that need fixed in this city) and she cannot do them all at once as a city councilperson. BUT she did stop the fish from being take (with other councilmembers), she has worked to keep it open till the 3rd (extension from original date). At this point it is in them mayor's hands. The bigger picture here is the mayor wants a new 150 million dollar facility...but where are we going to get the money? I think it is a good idea one day...but aquariums in nearly every major city don't make money. |

Amelia, I don't often criticize KK anymore on this forum because I don't have too. His plans and promises have fell short. He campaigns against himself. AND with Helmut's motto as Leadership, that puts those two in a race to be the dominate male. Sharon has a different vision. Its called Teamwork. Let Helmut and Malik fight it out for who will be the leader. I'll take teamwork over that any day. |
