Channel 7 had a Steve Wilson segment tonight on a tip that Kwame, his wife, mother and sister will leave for a weeklong Bahamas cruise at the end of this weekend. At a press conference today, Wilson asked him if he had "business outside the city this weekend" and Kwame told him that he did not. Wilson then followed up by asking if he was going to be out of the city this weekend, and KK said no. Wilson then told him that his source at Northwest Airlines said that Kwame is booked for a flight in seat "3B" and Kwame said they had cancelled those plans. Wilson countered by saying that he had just spoken with his source and that Kwame and his posse are still confirmed on the flight. Kwame said "they're lying" and moved on. Wilson said he called the cruise officials just before the conference and the person he spoke to said the mayor of Detroit was still scheduled to go on the cruise and they would know by now if he had canceled the plans. Two implications here: 1. The angle Wilson took was that KK should not leave the city in the middle of the budget crunch (KK even said that when the city council shot down his latest proposal, that's when he canceled the trip). 2. No mention of how the trip was being paid. Hopefully KK is not a complete arrogant SOB and refrained from putting it on the city credit card, but nothing would shock me at this point. |

I don't think anyone here would deny that the mayor of Detroit is not entitiled to some sort of vacation, especially when it is on his own dime. However, doesn't it look really bad to take a Bahamas trip at the time the budget is being worked on and after all the previous reports. I know it may not be wrong, but it really makes him look bad. |
