OK, I know this is a total shot in the dark, but....

My Calico cat ran out the door of my apartment yesterday, and hasn't been seen since. I know alot of you live/work in the downtown area, so if theres a sighting, could you let me know? jenvey@ameritech.net is my email adress. I'll post a picture as soon as I figure out how.

She's wearing a pink collar with a bell & humane society tag. That worries me because I know she'll have a tough time hunting down any food with the bell ringing around her neck. Her name is Penelope, but she usually resopnds to Herbie (the other cats name). Any help is appreciated..

Thanks for keeping an eye out!

She walked out the door of our apartment on Monday. We live on the top floor of the Boydell Building in Greektown.. We have searched the inside of the building 5 or 6 times, so I have to figure she made it outside, or she's in someones apartment. I just finished putting a flyer under every door in the building, so hopefully she'll turn up....

Seriously, some neighbor is probably feeding her and boring her to tears with pictures of the grandkids. She'll be back after she hits the Well for some $1.50 catnip.

Hey Paul, if it helps, I've known of several cats who took off for days on end, scared and/or depressed the hell out of their can-openers, I mean owners, and did in fact make it home- maybe a little dirty or roughed up, but okay nonetheless. I have 2 cats, grey mother/ daughter set, I never let 'em out (my building's surrounded by parking lots) & get really annoyed when they occasionally find their way out my front door into the stairs.

MC5, the humane society stresses that cats should be indoor animals. They get into too much trouble outside and tend to wander. The outside is for dogs.

czar is right. An outdoor cat's life expectancy is 5-7 years, verses an indoor cat which can easilly go 15 years. An outdoor cat is at risk for FIV, feline leukemia, cat fights, etc. Also, cats do crazy things like curl up against warm motors of unknowing car owners. You're best bet is to keep them inside or buy one of those huge cat wandering cages for your yard.

Oh, and PaulJ, don't worry, none of the bad cat happenings that I mentioned will happen to your cat while she's out on her big adventure! :)

Plus, cats tend to become the top predator where they aren't supposed to be. Song birds go bye bye. Cats just love warm blood.

and you can keep them generally free of fleas by keeping them indoors too.

PaulJ, after reading the thread about the wild dogs, here's hoping your cat didn't wander in the vicinity of Mack & St. Aubin.

But on a positive note, when I was a kid, our cat got lost outside in the dead of winter for about 2 weeks, and then suddenly showed up at the door (much thinner).

Well, The maintanance guy searched the entire building, including the basement I dont have access to. No cat. In order for her to have gotten out, she would have had to maker her way down 6 flights of stairs to the open door.. I think it's a little unlikely, personally, but you never know. My gut tells me we have a cat thief in the building...

Paul,

A few years ago my dog got away while I was away at school. She escaped on a Thursday, my Mom didn't tell me until Friday. I came home that afternoon after class to look for her. No luck. Depressed as hell, I went back to Ann Arbor because staying at home without the dog just didn't feel right, plus I had to make a hot trip to Cleveland the next morning and hadn't packed. The following Monday, after flunking an exam and feeling even worse, my Mom emailed me and said that the dog had come back on her own just a little bit dirty. I was so relieved. She has gotten out a couple of other times but come back on her own after either a few hours or just one day. The waiting and uncertainty is agonizing but sometimes animals just need to get out and explore a little bit. I'm sure your cat will come back soon. Good luck.

Best wishes on getting your cat back home, PaulJ. I've been through it too. I had a cocker spaniel named Ralph who wandered off (he had learned how to climb the fence) and after 10 days of distress, I got a call from someone a couple of miles from my house who said they would give me back my dog because he had eaten their Easter ham off the dining room table and chewed up the lining of his wife's best suit. Does your cat misbehave? If so, you may have a good chance of getting it back once your catnapper/adopter gets tired of its tricks.

Another time my dog Freddie got out by digging under the fence and wandered with a pack of stray dogs for a few days. A neighbor (from several blocks away), finally got Freddie to come to her so that she could see his tag. Cats are usually even shyer than dogs so the food bribe takes longer to work with them. Once she got Freddie in her yard, her dog took great exception to his presence. I wasn't at home and she couldn't leave the two dogs home alone, so she took Freddie to work where she was the receptionist. My phone message was "Freddie is alive and well and working at Michigan Bell." He had about 8 breakfasts from MaBell employees and was less than eager to come home with me when I got there, the fat brat.

We made up a flyer with her picture & description... I put it under every door in our building 2 days ago... No response. I am really starting to believe someone stole her, because it's a rather complicated trip down to the front door, and she is an *adorable* little cat. I had some friends of mine that had a cat stolen from them on the pretenses of "Hey, I'm your Neighbor, nice place....". Those people then literally snatched their cat out of the apartment & ran away with it! Maybe this is a worse-case scenario that they had to go thru, but it makes me think someone went "Hey, cute cat!" & kept her. The day she disappeared, we noticed her missing within minues & immediately searched the building.

I went around adding the words "Cash reward for her safe return" to all of the posters I put up. Maybe this will tug on the conscinse (wallet)of any hypothetical cat thief that may have grabbed her...

Poor kitty...

My dad’s cat came from my aunt’s farm in Chelsea. She got out about a month and a half ago and we are now expecting kittens. I just hope my dad gets her fixed after she has them. There are too many homeless animals on the streets today.

Good luck in finding your cat. She is really beautiful.

A friend of mine once shook a can of her cat's favorite treats in the stairwell of her building. Her cat cried from behind the door of the apartment that had taken the animal.

She got the landlord to let her in and reclaimed the cat. It might be worth a shot?

Now where would I go, if I had the chance to escape the lockdown? Damn, just think .... I get no "trim", no nights out on the town, no beer, the music sucks, people always want to pat my head and stroke my back - even when I don't feel like being bothered, not permitted to chase a rat or bird, can't fukk with those stupid dogs, and holy smoke - that talk of "fixing my ass" - whoa! Hell, I'd split too! But to where? where? think ... think hard ...

Paul, try keeping a little pile of food in front of your door. Maybe you can lure her back if she's on vacation?

Also, my ferral cat has disappeared a couple of times. She managed to get into a space between the basement and 1st floor of the townhouse that I used to live in, and she also has snuck into a the corner of my kitchen cabinets where there's hidden opening near the floor. They're tricky little buggers!

Again, good luck and hang in there! :)

The patented Treat Can Shake Method also worked for me. Mine got out one winter night , I slipped in the snow as I was chasing the lil' bastard. The next morning we were walking up the block shaking the treat can, *meow* comes from under a porch, there's the lil' dude, cold and tired.

Got her! She was found this afternoon, in a loft that no one was living in! I guess the maintanance guy was in there swapping out appliances recently, and she must've snuck in. luckily for her, she was a bit fat & the toilet was left open, so she was able to get by on "reserves"... We're not sure exactly when she got in there, but she ran away 2 weeks ago, so it could've been a while... She's a bit skinnier now, but seems like she's glad to be back. Thanks for looking out everyone!

Alright, some good news for once. In addition to the found cat, they just found a stray dog in Cincinnati, scanned the computer chip in its shoulder and reunited it with its owner in Florida who lost it six years ago!

Whew, I was really starting to feel guilty. I made chinese a few weeks ago and used my own personal recipe. I figured I'd just keep quiet in case the cat wasn't found. I was pretty sure that the cat I picked up was a str.....uh, never mind. Congrads Paul!

(p.s., anybody know where I can pick up about a dozen healthy kittens? Preferably with some nice lean meat on them? I will be sure to feed me...er them very well.)

I just saw a notice in the lobby. Sheila Cockrel lost her cat. It's name is Oreo. It was pretty prescient of her to name it after a food product, because when I find that beast I'm going to eat it. I'm off to the market to buy some taco shells now.

Heeeere, kitty, kitty...
