From the Freep (June 13, 2005): The problems are clearly someone else's fault Detroit Councilman Alonzo Bates had a lot to say last week. First, Bates ripped into his favorite targets: the media he accuses of trying to get him. Executives of WJBK-TV (Channel 2 in Detroit) "want to keep African Americans in bondage," Bates said. Bates is under federal investigation for paying an employee thousands of dollars while she was in New York City studying for a graduate degree, and paying another worker when she allegedly worked at a local hospital. WJBK's Fox 2 News broke the stories. The next day, Bates had more on his mind during a debate over city budget cuts. He chastised city employees who don't live in Detroit because they do not contribute to the property tax base. "We carry them," Bates said. "I'm saying it for the record. ... You folks who are not living here, you're heavy. These folks do not look like us, a lot of you. They take the jobs from us." Bytes will only note that Bates' chief of staff owns a home in Oak Park -- located in Oakland County. By Marisol Bello |

I'd hate to miss the outcome of the federal investigation and all that entails, so I'll root for him in the election. (There are special elections for a reason.) |

Lonnie Bates is freakin hilarious until you realize it's a real, or "real" city council meeting. Saw him making comments at Thurs meeting.. Had no idea what his story was about, or had to do with the matter at hand, but very funny. I don't think he even knew what his point was as he summed his 5 minutes up with, "hey, ya know"..... (((I guess i am suffering from withdrawl missing the old hamtram meetings))) |

He'll be out soon, But unfortunately he'll may be back in primary for city council seat. He has lot of friends in most Detroit Black Churches that will support him. |

If Bates gets reelected, it'll cost the taxpayers a lot of money. Once he goes to jail, we'll have to hold an expensive special election to replace him. We should save the time, effort and cash by getting rid of that dude now. |

I saw and read a piece of campaign literature he mailed out this past weekend and get this ... In it, Bates says he cares so much about fiscal responsibility, he returned approx. $450,000 of his budget to the city to help out with the city's budget crisis. |

How is it some 14,000 people still voted for this asshat? Un-fucking-believable! Apparently there are those that still feel Bates is the victim of being the target of the white man with a camera and is not guilty of any corruption. |

SS, this is crazy. Here you have a man full of corruption and he still makes it past the primary. But then again, look at KK. He's full of corruption and he still has a huge following. |

he's been elected to the school board before too. One would think that repeatedly endulging one self in expensive travels while Detroit Public School Students go without would have gotten him into the uneployment lines. But if you have trouble understanding how Bates keeps getting elected, look at all the fools that voted for Reagan in the 80's and Dressup in the last presidential election. Forgive my fellow Detroiters if many of them seem to be just as stupid as more than half the people in America. |

The cops' website is reporting that Lonnie Bates indictment is imminent and may have already been served. Can the next highest vote-getter in the primary take his place on the ballot? That would be the respected Roy McAllister. |

It's hard to believe that a school is named after this clown. Let's hope the voters show him they won't put up with his BS any longer. I just don't understand why the indictment is taking so long. They have all the evidence they need against Mr. B. |
