DCAPB statement on mayoral election

By Ron Scott
Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, Inc.

In just over two months time the citizens of the city of Detroit will go to the polls to select who the mayor will be for the next four years. As an organization, the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, Inc. (DCAPB) encourages all registered voters to intelligently exercise every citizen’s constitutional rights by going to vote for the candidates of their choice.

However, the DCAPB has not endorsed either of the two final candidates for Mayor in the upcoming race on November 8. Our organization has worked since 1996 to not only expose the growing cancer of police misconduct and brutality in the city of Detroit but to also eradicate the culture of abuse and the use of deadly force that is all to prevalent in the city.

We cannot endorse one political personality over another in the upcoming mayoral race when there has not been any comprehensive platform put forward by either candidate on how to stop police brutality which has cost the city approximately $200 million since 1987. These figures were put forward by the local newspapers based on information that was available to the reporters. The actual figures may be much higher since the Detroit Police Department has failed to develop a tracking system for problem officers who consistently violate the basic civil rights of citizens.

The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality remains committed to winning justice for the many people who have fallen victim to the arbitrary uses of lethal force. Some of the citizens and their families who we have worked with include Ronald Floyd, who barely escaped death when he was shot outside his home by the police in 2004. Another case that we have worked on is that of Anthony Higgins who was also shot on the city’s east side by two officers who were totally unprovoked in their actions.
