1. Mahaffey - I want a special election. The other choices are terrible.

2. J. Watson

3. K. Kenyatta

That is it for me.

I like Gist/Snow/Taylor all did not make it last time.

I hope Detroiters are smart enough to know not to vote for Mahaffey, the city has enough money problems without having to spend money on a special election. ILD, please don't be that ignorant.

Please tell me why candidate Rev. David Murray gets to use the honorific "Rev." on the ballot and on his signs? This is tremendously leading for the average Detroit voter - who, as other posters have indicated, are very highly influenced by church affilations.

David Murray is affiliated with Malik Shabazz - they have a "church" together. Shabazz is admits that he supports a violent solution to America's racial problems.

Murray was, sadly, the highest vote-getter in the August primary. Right now he is publically resisting the Governor's messages to the the transistion team because New Detroit is involved in the transition. Murray is aligned with Marie Thornton - almost a crazy woman.

So - any clue why he gets to use an honorific and others, such as PhD's do not? Have you ever seen a "Dr." honorific on the ballot?

Question:

Ken Jr. is probably a lock for the Presidency, but who will be Pro-Tem? Sheila Cockrel? JoAnn Watson? Hilmer Kenty?

JoAnn will probably be Pro-Tem, but don't count her out for President, while she doesn't accomplish much her message is very popular in Detroit.

Monica Conyers is an air-head! Have you ever met her?

Jai- Lee - He was Lonnie Bate's chief of staff and had a bit of a checkered past. I am not voting for him....it would be like voting for Karl Rove uggggh!

Just Joann and Maryann - I don't like any of my choices so I figure if Maryann gets in we will have a special election with some choices that are better. Joannn is great...she is a fighter.

I could live with Kwame Kenyatta though....and I did like Sarah Snow - bright lady.

Are you really that blatantly irresponsible to vote for a person who has announced her retirement due to battling lukemia?

Do you think we really have a good choice now? The last time this happened we had better choices and Joann Watson won.

Brenda Scott passed away unexpectedly, she didn't announce that she was retiring due to illness. Additionally, why cause more money to be spent on a special election? Even if they merge it with the Governor's race next year, it'll still cost the city money. Is the idea that *maybe* someone better might run for Council really worth costing your city more money?

I sincerely hope most voters in the city of Detroit are more responsible than you are.

Susanrosa - I see merits to your note. I don't disagree with what you are saying. But I don't like my choices...maybe we will have a better choice next time around. McCallister, Gist, Snow, and Maureen Taylore...were all good and did not make it. I would like to see one of them make it versus the lot of former motown singers and boxers.

I agree with what some may see as a lack of viable candidates. Is there a way you can only vote for those who you want to win (and not Mahaffey), maybe only one or two people and leave the rest blank? I honestly think that's a better option.

Save cops -- don't vote for Mahaffey

Special election to replace Detroit councilwoman costs $1 million

The Detroit News

Marianne Mahaffey, dean and president of the Detroit City Council, says she'll retire at the end of December if she wins re-election next month.

While voters may be tempted to pay homage to the popular councilwoman by casting a vote for her in the Nov. 8 election, they should keep in mind that doing so could make the city's bad financial conditions even worse.

They should pass by her name and choose someone else.

I read that story also and I have reluctantly changed my mind. I will not vote for M. Mahaffey. Unfornately we are not stuck with any really great choices.

The next Detroit City Council installation will be the final, as we've known it for decades, because there WILL be a change in the election structure.

I wouldn't vote for MM anyway. Her time was up years ago. But here's the worse part, there's no one else to vote for.

Susanarosa is right. I will only vote for one or maybe two council candidates and leave the rest blank.

I am voting for Joann Watson and MAYBE Barbara Rose Collins (at least she has legislative experience).

That is it! The rest are worthless. I actually met Martha Reeves at an event - she is clueless.

# 1. Alberta Tinsley-Talabi I take a certain pride in marking her name first because of her stand many years ago against the saturation of liquor ads put up on the East Side.
# 2 Ken Cockerel I believe he's good good sense.
# 3 Sheila Cockerel ditto
# 4 Hilmer Kenty I believe the's he best of the new people.

In the next week, I'll have to decide the other choices that I'll make.

For City Clerk, I'm definately voting for...I can't think of her name, you know who I mean: she's running against Jackie Currie.

You don't have to vote for all nine candidates. If you only like five, then just vote for those five. Your ballot is still valid even if you don't for the maximum number.
