Maybe it was a general rate increase. Rates always seem to rise.

The only area I know of where real progress was made was the police dept policy change to disallow reporting stolen vehicles by phone. That should reduce the incidence of insurance fraud, which would then lower rates somewhat.

Other than that, most auto insurance companies are probably not making any more profit in Detroit than they are anywhere else. (Some probably try to, but you need to shop around and avoid those that really overcharge. Definitely use the progressive.com rate comparison thingy.) Mostly though, insurance companies' costs are higher in the city so they charge more.

I wish I was an idealist like Doug. I wonder if costs are no higher why All State and State Farm quoted me about 4 times what I pay to another insuracnce company for equal coverage.

Maybe their drivers just have bad luck. We need to change the state insurance policy in general. If a drunk from Birmingham rear ends someone in front of my house while he is leaving a Tigers game it costs me more, not his neighbor. Wonderful policy.

Theft is not the leading factor of costs, colission is. Due to the number of events downtown for games, Hart plaza events, CBD employees etc my insurance goes up when they decide to get drunk and cause an accident in 201. Their behaviour affects me, not their neighbors.

And your point is? OK, so I choose to live somewhere that is getting the shaft based upon our insurance laws and I should just be happy with it.

How fucking stupid is that logic. That comment just gave me a headache it was so fucking dumb.

No problem - e-mail will be on the way. Also make sure that you have your homeowners/renters insurance on the same policy. Pretty large savings.

Ok, I could probably change "most" to "many" insurance companies not making more profit in Detroit.

Still, the only reason that some companies would go for a higher profit margin is that they specifically believe Detroiters are more gullible and will pay the extra-high rate without shopping around, since Detroiters already expect to pay a somewhat higher rate. That is a real possibility, I won't deny it. But it just illustrates how important it is to shop around.

More likely these companies (All State, State Farm) with the exhorbitant rates probably have bad/simplistic data or they don't adequately protect themselves from fraud, so they can't match another company's much lower rate.

I don't think there's any question that the costs to the insurance company are higher in Detroit, though. Higher fraud, higher percentage of uninsured, higher theft, and probably more collisions although I'm not sure about that.

You have a point about downtown events/etc though... you probably get screwed a little on that.

(And I am a city resident as you probably know... and paying car insurance.)

200?

Try having your insurance increase from $1800 to $3600 a year.

Get Real, Doug. Do you work for an insurance company? It's price gouging, plain and simple.

I thought I heard that was one of McPhails projects. I switched to liberty mutual a few years ago and they cut my rates in half.
