Hi,
Two of my coworkers are relocating to our Canton office and are looking into living downtown. Can anyone recommend an insurance company or two with decent rates, relatively speaking?
One wants PLPD the other wants limited collision.
Thanks!

I too would appreciate any advice about auto insurance in Michigan. I'm paying very high rates now in Phoenix, partially because of a "V8 performance premium." Do Michigan insurers also charge extra for V8 engines? I know they can tell V8s from the VIN code.

There's a high auto theft rate here too allegedly because of the proximity to Mexico. I'll be moving to Macomb County though so I gather auto theft would be less of a factor in rates than in Detroit?

Yes, please continue recommending insurance companies with decent rates.

Tell your ins. agent you promise not to cruise Van Dyke, or Gratiot Avenue, popping off the line every time you pull up next to another hot moma.

Heck, I just use the V8 to engine brake. I hardly ever use the friction brakes.

Thanks Jjaba.

I just want to help out my co-workers and get them into the CoD.
I have lived there for 2 years but work get a vehicle since my job has my driving 35k per year so I haven't had to shop for insurance yet.
Right now it looks like State Farm is OK in Detroit. Does that LA Insurance have good PLPD rates?

Ilovedetroit, it might reduce confusion if, at the beginning of your posts, you include the names of individuals to whom your comments are directed.

Try Costco (Ameriprise?)?

I tried to get an online quote just out of curiosity (to compare to what I pay in CA right now), but the Michigan insurance is totally and completely different than California I had no idea if I had filled out a similar coverage or not.

Is it the no-fault?

Yeah, my concerns exactly. I know no-fault's unique in Michigan but I don't know what effect it has on rates or even what it means, other than the obvious. Um, "obvious" meaning there would be no litigation or effect involved as to who was at fault in an accident?

We used what I think is called an insurance broker. They aren't the insurance company themself, but do the shopping for you. They find the best fit that they can, matching your goals for both quality of coverage and rate. We both have very good driving records in our household. We also took the best package deal of auto/home. There were others with better auto only price, but we needed to consider the whole.

We had shopped around before and thought we were doing pretty well through Nationwide (somewhere around Gratiot & 7). We couldn't afford the high home insurance premium for replacement cost. So we covered our butts and just insured for the mortgaged amount. With the new insurance we more than doubled the coverage for the same premium. And our car insurance went down by thousands. They have us using Auto Owners now. This was for 2 cars with collision coverage.

I dealt with a woman named Stacy at Total Insurance Services in Clarkston, MI. (248)625-0410. I was surprised (and saddened) that my best insurance deal did not come from a business located in Detroit.

I like Amica - amica.com

The backlash may be to the ridiculous difference in Detroit compared to the rest of the region. Insurance makes people a little touchy. The most important thing is to get a lot of quotes. What is ridiculous redlined in Detroit (AllState, State Farm) may be the best deal in the city, more specifically the zip code, that you choose to move to.

Amica works best for me but they may not work best for someone in a suburban zip code. Shop around and get as many quotes as you can and conitnue to shop around as the prices seems to be in a constant flux and some insurance carriers like to up your coverage at renewal without telling you (They can get away with it since it is in the new policy that you 'choose' to renew)

Michigansheik--there is one option that Michigan offers--you can go to the friend of your cousin's girlfriend and get a bogus temp tag (fresh off the 'ol HP printer) and just skip the whole insurance thing all together. Many in the metro region are doing just this!

Insurance is going to be outrageous in Detroit compared to the suburbs, especially Canton. What's ironic about this is that there are probably a ton more accidents in Canton due to the overcrowded and poorly designed roads in comparison to the traffic load they are now carrying.

You can do 56's plan, but be prepared to do some explaining to the cops if you get pulled over and don't have valid insurance and/or tags.

A better option would be to insure the car in the suburbs at a relative or good friends house. It's not technically legal, but I hardly find the insurance companies rates to be justified either.

I'll echo my earlier more detailed post. When we were living in Ypsi, we were paying typical suburban rates.

When we moved to Detroit we went through State Farm, then Nationwide, and finally Auto Owners through an insurance broker. Our rates are again at their former suburban level. I'd give Stacy at Total Insurance a call. (248)625-0410

When I was shopping around I had to make literally dozens of phone calls, faxes of current policy. The beauty of the broker service is that THEY did all of that shop/comparison for me. They must get their kickback from the insurance company. I sure don't seem to be paying a fee. Anyhow, it's worth a try.

I also found that the earlier insurance companies that we worked with used specific zip code rather than general city of Detroit to try to get us the best rate.

I also have amica, after hearing about JT1's experience's with them....their quoted premium was almost HALF of what state farm wanted from me for similar coverage. I felt bad changing becasue my SF agent was right down the street but heck, you can't argue with a several hundred dollar savings.

Rms, yes, brokers are good. An AAA (car-buying, not insurance) broker found me a superb $25k car for only $18k. I didn't have to lift a finger. AAA might not offer that service in Michigan though. They should.

Thanks for that phone number!

I have a shitty-ass driving record (no tickets, just hitting unmoving objects) and my insurance from GPP to Detroit only went up $175 with AAA.

Of course, it also went up $100 when I moved from RO to GPP but that's another story...

If you or a relative are or were in the armed forces you should check out www.usaa.com; it's a financial istitution that does insurance too. Absolutely the lowest insurance anywhere...suburbs or city.

Last month I went on the search for car insurance and called everyone (AAA, Allstate, State Farm, et cetera), trying to get the best price. Moving back here from Illinois, I was shocked at some of the quotes I received. It appears that auto insurance in MI is 2x the cost in IL. In my experience Farmers insurance was the cheapest. They offered more coverage for less. Their homeowners insurance is also about $200 less then State Farm and All State.

To qualify, you or your relative must have been discharged from the armed forces no more then 6 months prior, or you don't qualify. I tried this too.
