I'm trying to get as much information together as possible before I head to Detroit. I'm trying to get several photos of various locations together for my Mom. She grew up on Concord and Benson, and attended Our Lady of Sorrows and Holy Family Catholic Churches. I've located Holy Family Church on Chrysler Dr., but can't locate Our Lady of Sorrows. I assume it was in the Concord/Benson area since they walked to church, but I can't pinpoint the location. Any information is appreciated. |

There is Annunciation/Our Lady of Sorrows Parish one block off Jefferson just west of Cadillac Blvd. I'm not sure if the present building is the original OLOS or not...perhaps it was lost in the merger. |

Our Lady of Sorrows (Meldrum & Benson) burned down in April, 1963 when a warehouse across the street caught fire and spread burning debris on to the church roof. |

Photos of the church can be found here, search for Briggs fire, or the church name. Virtual Motor City |

Initially I had the same idea as Gumby. I thought the Farmington Hills Our Lady of Sorrows was the same congregation, re-established out in the suburbs after their inner-city church burned. However, one source I have says the community raised the funds after the fire to build a new church, which was dedicated one year later. Then, looking at the photos at WSU's Virtual Motor City, I thought the "new" Sorrows church looked vaguely familiar: It's been many months since I've been down Meldrum, but across the street from the old site of Our Lady of Sorrows is the New Liberty Baptist Church which, according to their website, moved in to this building at 2965 Meldrum on December 3, 2000: Here's an aerial view with the old church site outlined in red, and the new church can be seen across Meldrum: Checking a 1967 phone book, I see that Our Lady of Sorrows in Detroit was still in Detroit at 2985 Meldrum and that a different Our Lady of Sorrows was already established and going strong in Farmington Hills. On another note, I have these pictures in a book (also at VMC) which led me to believe that these fireman went inside to save the crucifix (probably afraid to say no to the nuns) before the buiding crumbled: But then this photo has recently been added to the archives, showing the men carrying the crucifix out of a church after the roof had already caved in. I'm surprised that it survived the collapse:

Our Lady of Sorrows of Detroit merged with Annunciation Church on Parkview near Jefferson and became Annuciation/Our Lady of Sorrows(AOLOS). In June of this year St. Anthony's on Sheridan and Gratiot closed to merge with AOLOS. The merged church has a new name. It is now called Good Shepherd. |

According to the Archdiocese of Detroit website, Our Lady of Sorrows didn't close and merge with Annunciation until 2000: http://www.supportforyou.org/A ODOnline/News+++Publications+2 203/Michigan+Catholic+News+122 03/2006+The+Michigan+Catholic+ News+13857/060630+-+Parish+cel ebrates+100+years+and+plans+fo r+merger.html |

Wow! I had no idea that St. Anthony's closed following a merger with Annunciation/Our Lady of Sorrows earlier this year. I hope that whoever buys the church buildings takes really good care of them, because they are impressively handsome!!! A real beauty built 1901, designed by Donaldson and Meier. |

Thanks for all the meticulously researched info on the Detroit churches. There was also a Catholic boarding school for girls near the St. Anthony Church. I believe it closed in l967 (called The Felician Academy.) |

Swiburn, The Felician Academy was located on St. Aubin and Canfield, across the street from St. Albertus, a mile or two west of St. Anthony. For those interested in early photos of Detroit Catholic Churches, check out this website: http://freepages.genealogy.roo tsweb.com/~detroitchurches/ |
