Had a client who needed some aerials shot of Detroit. I got to spend half a day in helicopter hovering over Detoit. It was great fun. Here are some of the "outtakes" All imgaes © 360michigan / Mark Houston 2006 |

Mt, Did you yourself fly that route? Since I've never flown near any big cities downtowns, I was wondering if you only have to file a VFR flight plan and stay the FAR/AIM distances from each building? |

In my line of work we've used McMahon too. That's some crazy little airport they fly out of. We use the large Skiorsky's, but you were probably in the Bell. Was Scott your pilot? They are all great there. |

All awesome photos. The last time I flew in I managed to get a skyline picture that was too far away and blurry to produce anything like those. In the past I've had a variety of departures, but none seem to come right over downtown. |

Lowell, that old football field that's the last picture in your photo tour, was the De La Salle's home field of the fighting Pilots. Can't even see the old cinder running track with the squared off corners that was our home advantage, since it's all overgrown. |

As DodgeMain said, the unidentified intersection is Gratiot & Flanders to the right (east) and St Patrick to the left (west). You were landing to the west on City Airport's runway 25. http://maps.google.com/maps?f= q&hl=en&q=Gratiot+and+FLanders ,+Detroit,+MI&ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1 &z=16&ll=42.412716,-82.992353& spn=0.011549,0.026886 |

Looking at aerial shots always reminds me how much prime real estate cobo hall takes up along the west side of downtown on the river. The skyline would be so much more interesting if there were scrapers in that area instead of Cobo. But great shots by all especially the night ones. |

Another gorgeous shot Don; it expresses the definition of Le Detroit [the straits] perfectly. Don or MikeM, just curious, what are the altitudes limits that you must obey when flying over Detroit? I seem to remember it was something like 3000 feet but helicopters [which I find mild annoying since they are so loud] can fly much lower. Is it a big deal to go over Canadian airspace in the post 911 era? |

Lowell: Thank You for your kind words. Answer to your question(s) regarding my type of operations (General Aviation) Federal Aviation Regulation Part 91 GENERAL OPERATING AND FLIGHT RULES Sec. 91.119 Minimum safe altitudes: General. Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes: (a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface. (b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft. (c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure. (d) Helicopters. Helicopters may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (b) or (c) of this section if the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface. In addition, each person operating a helicopter shall comply with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the Administrator. RE: Canadian airspace in the post 911 era? No, must be on a flight plan going into or out of Canada. |

Mthouston, can you say what it cost to rent the helicopter for the half day shoot you did? And, in the type of helicopter you were in could more than one photographer be shooting at the same time without getting in each other's way? You know where I'm going with this! I'm going to count the change in my piggy-bank!! :-) Livedog2 |
