At one time Taffy's Bar was called Garvin's. It probably had other names too. I would go there with my Dad when I was a little kid. He would have two Stroh's in the time that I would drink one Coke.

Ah yes.... the Plum Pit... anyone remember Tobacco Road?? Another head shop....

And getting back on track... does anyone remember Geisz Hall?? Can't remember where on Gratiot it was, but I remember going to several weddings there as a kid.

Oh, and we called them "RUTS" in the Balduck Park area as well...

They were ruts on Pelkey, too.I had to take them up from the street in front of my house whenever it was warm enough. My dad had an ice chipper and that's what I had to pull the ice and chip into small enough pieces to put next rto the driveway.

My dad was worried about tearing the front spoiler off his car (which he eventually did)

Steelworker, I remember Danny Martin! I remember the house you lived in too. Your uncle was a few years younger then me, but I think he was in my sister Joy's class. Ask him if he remembers Chris Thomas or his brothers Tony and Darry. Chris and I were pretty good friends until his family moved to New York. Also, was Jen Starks the sister of Danny Starks?

Steelworker, by the way does your uncle still know Dawn Manning? Used to have a crush on her in 4th grade!

Chitaku, my maternal grandparents lived on Eastwood, east of Hayes. I don't recall hearing either of those two surnames, though.

There were ruts all over town in the winter because the city only plows the main streets. However, the point of my original story is that we eventually called our streets "the ruts" all year long and our neighborhood came to be known as "the Ruts". I quess you had to be part of our nighborhood gang to understand.

I grew up on Pinewood street and moved out when I was 2.

I remember the Manufacturers Bank on the corner.(later Comerica Bank)

I also remember the Montgomery Ward's and I believe some sort of arts and crafts store, but I don't remember the name.

Dday,
Good chance many of us on this thread knew each other as Northeast Detroit was pretty close-knit.

Speaking of 7 & Gratiot, went by there today and was wondering Does anybody know what they are putting in the old Fretter's. Looked like they were working on it late in the evening.

Hello all,

Great thread. I lived on McCormick between Rossiter and Landsdown from the early 70's until 87. I went to St. Jude(82) and Notre Dame(87). I remember many of the places mentioned. It was really another time. I spent much time at Heilman's, Merit drugs, Tastee Freeze etc. What I remember most is how great Halloween was compared with today. You could hit Dexters Lounge, 31 flavors etc on Morang and load up your pillowcase. Do the same on Kelly and then repeat through out the neighborhoods. Kids don't get that today.

The party stores and arcades were great when the arcade games were popular. Thanks for the memory jog....
