Special thanks to Mikeg for providing server space!
"Mr. GQ" visits Detroit but where is he standing? Also, what is he leaning against? For a larger version of the photo, please click here Ookpik |

I would guess that he's standing on or near the corner of Adams and Clifford |

Southeast corner of Times Square/East Park Place and Grand River Looking north. You can see the back of the Statler Hotel and the Automobile Club Of Michigan building below the stop sign and to the right. Isn't this Tony Peroni's building that was damaged during the demolition of the Statler Hotel? |

Below the Auto Club of Mich sign on the side of the building would be printed Detroit Auto Inter-Insurance Exchange, which was the " auto insurance end" of the AAA. The DAIIE offices were across the street in the UA building. When I worked there in '55, the UA building was not air conditioned other than the 11th floor which was the Tabulating Department where all the heat-generating tabulating machines were located and which cranked out premium notices on IBM index cards. We got to all go home early if it got "overly hot"outside, but those in Tabulating stayed at their machines. |

Definitely one of the old small mailboxes that were common before 1960 or so. And it looks like on that pole behind him, where the "stop" sign is mounted, is one of the old police call boxes. |

He looks a bit like a young Jimmy Stewart. It's one of those ties that hides stains well. Looks like a paw print at the bottom. There's a bit of text on the mailbox that I can't quite make out: "MFG CO. ... PA" (for Pennsylvania). |

Very cool! Looks like that mailbox has been in service for many years as that is a modern car parked nearby. |
