That's really bad. But I like it. Here's a shot of an old station at Harper & Garland. I like the way this place looks. The house next to it was in pretty good shape.

I couldn't tell. It had been painted over a number of times.
The photo looks as though there are zebra stripes on the building. Those weren't actually there, it's a lousy image. I've got to learn how to compress the pictures without losing the quality.

Here's what that former Mobil Gas Station at the SE corner of East Seven Mile and Waltham looks like today:

old Mobil gas station

The old Castiglione Accordion building isn't looking any better, either:

It was a Car Wash for a Time. Someone attempted to rehab it and painted over the "Hand Car Wash" sign.

Even during the 90s, Seven Mile bet. Hoover and Schoenherr had a well-kept Commercial strip (Video Stores, Restaurants, Grocer, Ice Cream Shops, TV Shops, Dentist, Appliance Store, Oriental Food Store, FLower Shops, Moving Company, Gas Stations, Hair Salons, Auto Parts Store, Car Shops/Collisions, Laundromats, Even Youth Centers) Not the case today though.

I love the posts of the old gas stations. I have a photo of a TULSA station on 8 mile rd. Will find and scan for post here., I believe the sign either reads 13.9 or 18.9 per gallon, oh yes what a memory

Re: Gas Station sites. I owned and operated the Sinclair Station on E. Warren and Maxwell during the years 1951-53. I pulled an all-nighter during the first big freeze of the winter and fell asleep at my desk. I woke up at five a.m. and still had the five hundred bucks in my pocket I sold that station and then lived "Ordinary's" dream. I bought the Shell Station on E. Nine Mile Road and Columbus with a lovely two bedroom apartment above it.

Could someone get a shot of an old Speedway 79 station on Conner and Elmdale-if it's still there? I worked there many years ago.

Glad to see this thread's still going on. Was up in the UP for a week. I can say one good thing about polluted water here in the D: No black flies!

What happens to threads when they 'fall off' the list. That is, when nobody posts anything and they go to the bottom and beyond.

Tponetom,
In what town is E. 9 Mile and Columbus?

Bulletmagnet,
Great pictures as usual. I've got a bunch that I want to take.

Hey, Ordinary. When the thread falls off the page I think it gets archived. Here are a few of the series that I took earlier this spring:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com /1402/577368088_47f999be79_b.j pg
http://farm2.static.flickr.com /1209/642477016_c4ed6ab497_b.j pg

http://farm2.static.flickr.com /1287/642894755_c9848dc130_b.j pg

I have about a dozen more to post, mostly west side. And I got a few from today, as well, but I misplaced the SD card...damn! I still have to do the request for Caldogven when time permits.

Bullet
That was a Speedway 79 station. Our primary work was doing mechanical repairs on taxi cabs from the Checker Cab depot on Longview the next block up. Secondary was pumping gas and handing out Gold Bell Gift Stamps, one for every ten cents worth of gas bought. The best part of that was cleaning the windshields of good looking women with short skirts!
I also worked at a Gulf station on Mack and mayby, Lakepoint- I don't remember for sure.
And a Pure station on Warren two or three blocks east of Alter.

Thanks again!

I don't know if it's been posted but here's what was one of my favorite gas stations at Michigan and Howard in West Dearborn. This was as they were tearing it down a few years ago. The new one tries to recreate this one but just doesn't have the same feel.

Wow, that's pretty cool and pretty funny you took that a few days ago and from the same angle. It's nice to see it still operating. The one here was torn down and replaced so they could have a larger retail space.

Believe it or not I remember when this station was pumping gas! there were two older men that worked it in gray striped uniforms with gray officer style hats. I think it was a standard oil station, the pumps had red crown globes that lit up at night. I also got ice cream right across 30th street from this station at the "dairy delite" which you probably seen the remains still standing when you snapped this shot. I attended grade school 2 blocks east on 28th street.

Karl_jr,
How many years ago was that? It just seems so far removed that there was actually somebody working there, especially older men. For some reason I just really like driving through that area. I worked in the Tireman-Livernois area for about ten years. I was driving around and saw St. Francis d' Assisi church over there and fell in love with it. When my little brother is in town we take my mom there for Mass. Then we let her buy us breakfast somewhere! What was the name of your grade school?

Ordinary, I am talking early 1960's. I attended Gethsemane Lutheran on 28th, The church and school are still standing. I agree St Francis is a beautiful church, I also attend mass there every once and a while. That stretch of Buchanan between W.Grand and Livernois had everything you would need along time ago, Movie theater, shoe repair, pet shops, a&p, about 10 bars and liqour/beer stores, record store, jewelery repair, home furniture, coney island, pool hall, dance halls and etc. all LONG GONE!

Karl_jr,
Thanks for the info. It seems so strange that that was a thriving area at one time. Is Gethsemane Lutheran the huge white wooden church on 28th? I always have to drive by there when I'm in the area. It sure is a beauty.

Yes, that was Gethsemane the congregation closed down and the pews, fixtures and etc. where used to make another lutheran church on farmington road near I-96 in livonia. A lot of my family history took place there.

Yes ordinary, that's me. I was about four there.

I remember going to have lunch with dad during the summer. Sometimes we would go after work to the park on the Detroit River next to the terminal? building. Or, dinner at Flaming Embers. I also collected the bottle caps from his Coke machine to get a couple of NFL footballs in 1966. I still have the letter from the Coca-Cola corporation.

Dad quit the business in 1966 after a couple of break-ins. He worked at Revere Copper and Brass for a bit, then he became a mechanic at Parke-Davis on the river.

When did Revere Copper and Brass go out of business? I used to do a little scrapping across Jefferson from there at a place called Wayne Scrap. Some of the old guys who worked there told me it got pretty crazy when they closed it down; that guys were shooting at each other over the scrap that was still there.
I remember going out with my older brother to get bottle caps out of the pop machines. He used to have a magnet on a string and 'fish' them out of the machines. This was all for a little set of plastic football helmets. That was probably around 1966. We always went to the gas stations because they had the pop machines out front. He was scared of the one guy because he was crabby if you got your fishing device stuck in the machine. He probably had a million things to do and then he has to go unlock the pop machine to get some dumb kid's magnet out of the machine.
I understand crabbiness and its causes the older I get.

Anyone remember the Martin Oil Company gas stations? There was one on Fort Street in Lincoln Park (now a Citgo). Another was on Allen Road in Southgate. I believe another was on Fort Street just north of the bridge by Oakwood. The last two are gone. It was home of the Purple Martin gas.

I don't remember when Revere closed. I also got a set of the plastic helmets.

The magnet trick sounds like a good one.

Did anyone collect the Sunoco Antique car coins?
I remember gas was 18 cents a gallon then.

Does anyone remember the 10 cent popcorn machines on Belle Isle?

Oh hell no! Now that is really something that I have not even had the foggiest thought about in 40 years. I remember you held a little sack under a chute and dropped the dime in then it would blow hot popcorn out.

Here is a picture of my grandfather's Gulf Station at Mack and Cadillac on the eastside. My Dad says the station was just big enough for an office. The hoist was outside.

Yesterday, while looking for some information needed for another thread, I decided to check under the HOF tab. To my surprise, and great delight, I discovered that my much beloved thread "Defunct Detroit Gas Stations" was now listed here! I feared that it had long ago fallen into the abyss of the DY Archives. I must say it made my day, and I am honored that it fit the high standard to make the HOF. Thanks to all who have participated to make it an interesting topic. I have some maintenance to do, as some of the early photos have dead links. That will be fixed. Thanks Lowell :-)

Doodles: What was that red brick, Italianate building on the corner of Mack & Cadillac? It looks like it could have been a pre-Civil war era house.

Sorry, Eastsidedame... I don't know. The gas station was before my time and only know it through pictures. I asked my Dad and he didn't remember either. I haven't been down there in a long time.
