I have four Jewish-style delis listed here. If you've been to any of them, please give me your comments. I've avoided the suburban places since they are obviously in Jewish areas and already rated by jjaba as really great. What's your opinion of: ESQUIRE DELI, 12647 Dexter Blvd., at Fullerton. LOU'S DELI, 8224 W. Mc Nichols at Roselawn. NATHAN'S DELI, 581 E. Jefferson at St. Antoine. DELI UNIQUE, 3663 Woodward Ave. at Parsons. Thank you. Rate them for atmosphere, the food, the service, etc. jjaba |

jjaba, is Lou's Deli, on W. McNichols at Roselawn, across from Marygrove College? When I'm a senior and have off-campus priveliges, I think a visit to Lou's Deli is in order for some of my U of D friends and myself. Honestly, I haven't been in there myself, but I heard that some seniors ventured over to Lou's in 2001 before they graduated, and when he told me about Lou's, his friend chimed in and said, "Subway sucks. Lou's rocks." I have heard only positive comments about Lou's from other people as well - they seemed to enjoy it on an overall level. I shall try it myself one day. motownmark04, suddenly hungry |

NATHAN'S DELI, 581 E. Jefferson at St. Antoine. : Purchased something to take to Hart Plaza when I met Erikd and Skulker. I got takeout to strap to my bicycle. Atmosphere - none Food - good, but nothing spectacular, kinda pricey Service - quick, counter pick-up |

I don't think you want to call it 'Chooish style' but my favorite in the city limits is Eph McNally's on Porter at Brooklyn. Great sandwiches, soups and atmosphere.=SC= |

mmmm Nathan's. A good ol' Blue Cross haunt. And being friends with the owners always helps! The owners were thinking of selling the place, but they do so well during lunch, I don't think they will. |

Souper Sonic, Trowbridge and Caniff. yum yum. Some of the best soup I've ever had (besides PVC's Dill Pickle), and a great selection of sandwiches. :d |

Never been to Fofo's but I've had people get takeout for me. Verrry good. If you're lost and you get on the wrong side of Eight Mile try The Onion Roll on Woodward just north of Eleven Mile. Verrrry good. If you get more lost and you find yourself at Evergreen and Twelve Mile there's a good sit-down place that I forget the name of. They have buckets of pickles on the table so you can give yourself a cucumber ilius while you wait for your food, like at Wolfie's. (Jjaba knows Wolfie's, I trust.) Verrrry good. (This place is kind of hidden in the back behind the Kroger's. Stop at New York Bagel on your way home - best in Detroit, also at Greenfield north of 10 Mile and Woodward north of Nine Mile (any other NY Bagels in area?).) |

I've been to Soupersonic twice. Cool kinda hippie vibe, but I was twice disappointed that they didn't have a bean soup on the menu (menu changes daily). Do they have a black bean or navy bean? I may find myself in Hamtramck tonight - this will need further investigation. |

There's a old Polish Deli on Michigan Ave. between Patterson and Lonyo. It's called Markowicz Deli. They have best food in the southwest side. |

Can't get too much of that kosher heavenly ham, eh jjaba? Okay, this has nothing to do with delis or kosher, but it's a food thread so I'm putting it here. Go to the liquor store on E. Jefferson about 1/4 mile out of downtown, the one with an old pickup truck sporting an Alabama Style Chicken sign. Go inside and buy a whiting sandwich, 2 pieces of deep fried fish on wheat bread, for $1.59. I had one for breakfast and it was fantastic. Thank me later. |

Lou's on McNichols is very good. New ownership a few years back kept the basic menu but added some good twists like sweet potato pie for dessert. |

townie, The restaurant you mentioned WAS named Pickle Barrel at Evergreen and Twelve Mile. This is a place of my childhood, we'd go there every week as it was a 1 minute drive from my house. I believe, however, that it has been gone from there for years. When was the last time you were there? I'm pretty sure it was turned into a Powerhouse gym or something like that. |

jjaba hangs loose. His heart will always be on the Northwest side of Detroit. Northlawn and Schoolcraft to be exact. In his heart, jjaba is still buying penny candies from Dieters and his milk and bread with war ration stamps at Belians on Intervale and Northlawn where he also played pickup baseball games in the vacant lot. jjaba |

My favorite deli was the Schnelli Deli on Warren near Woodward, which no longer exists. (Unless they're at another location that's still open?) I've tried roast beef sandwiches at other delis, but none are as good as Schnelli's. |

Oh jjaba, Hanging out in my hood. And buying some penny candy and other nick nacks. At least he's not afraid of the ghetto. To you all suburbanites who are scared of Detroit. I urge you all to visit the ghettos of Detroit. And stroll by down memory lane of your once beautiful hoods. Maybe you will find me in the local Polish and Black delis. |

Hey, I just had luch at Zoom, located in the 211 building. I had the turkey club- not bad! Most of the food is under $5 and the atmosphere is 1950's diner style. There are also vegetarian options. I've gotta say that the best turkey club I've had in Detroit so far is from Hunter House. |
