to their own. from today's Freep.com It pays to have your spouse on the Detroit City Council. If you're U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr., you may even get a tunnel named after you. The council on Wednesday unanimously approved a resolution -- introduced by Conyers' wife, Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers -- to rename the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel after the long-serving congressman, a Detroit Democrat. The resolution does not carry the force of law. It simply puts the council's sentiments on paper. The resolution now heads to the mayor's office. A spokesman said the city, which co-owns the tunnel with the city of Windsor, is exploring the legality of it. Only the Detroit half of the tunnel would be renamed. One Detroiter who lives in Conyers' 14th Congressional District doesn't get it. "What's his connection to the tunnel?" asked Peggy Rose, 63. "It seems self-serving for his wife to suggest it." |

I sure am glad their attending to the important business of the city. First a law to give tickets to folks who talk on a cell phone while driving, now a resolution to rename a bridge after your husband. I'm glad the CC sees the seriousness of the budget problems this city is facing. |

When Black-folks took control of all city services in Detroit after 1975. Most of the historical buildings, Parks, Streets and even Detroit Public School buildings are named after famous Black heroes. And most Detroit sites that are used to named after famous white American heroes are suddenly gone. Now soon the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel will get a new name after a famous Black Democrat name John Conyers. WHAT A DREAM COME TRUE for Pro Tempore, Monica Conyers. This isn't that big of a deal. Congressman Conyers' long record of public service certainly merits recognition. Unfortunately, in what appears as another confirmation that Councilperson Conyer is not a deep thinker, the merits of an effort to bestow a deserved honor are overshadowed by the glaring nepotism. Gee, who could have seen that problem coming? The proposal smacks of low-class chest thumping by the honoree when the spouse is spearheading the proposal. |

I was going to say, Wash_man...Kwame better not tell her no or she might kick his ass. Skimming the commentary on this at freep.com, one can see how things like this bring out the racists in our community...opening a whole other can of worms. |

Put a moratorium on any of this non quality of life non-sense until the budget is fixed, services are top notch and all the real issues are taken care of. I am guessing this is only 10 minutes of CCs time but it is wasted time and energy. What I find even more bothersome is that the comments in the Detroit News print version come from Monica Conyers spokesman. Why the heck do CC members need spokesmen. Seems like a gigantic waste of staff money. |

I doubt if it took ten minutes their time this is a complete non issue but it's front page news. Yet when CC was holding budget meetings they barely warranted a blurb. Honestly is make such big deal about resolutions why no cover all the one in the legislatures they pass couple of them almost every week in each house |

Although Rep. Conyers has been a wonderful thorn in the presidents side, his sponsorship of legislation over the last 40 plus years in congress have been half-ass at best. What better way to honor him than to name half a tunnel after him!! |

Swingline, how dare you bring up a double racial image into this sensitive issue by saying, "The proposal smacks of low-class chest thumping by the honoree when the spouse is spearheading the proposal." This implies that the proposer is either a gorilla or an African spear thrower; dare we say a spear chucker? For the uninitiated and to validate my claim of racism the definition for spear chucker is located at: http://www.urbandictionary.com /define.php?term=spear+chucker Livedog2 |

"That fucking spear chucker ate all of my watermelon because I can see about a gallon of juice on his big fat nigga lips." LOL! someone got a little carried away with the example! At least it's not, "Happy International Friendship Hug Tunnel" or "Comerica Tunnel". They should name it after a politician with the last name of Love, so it can be "the love tunnel" |

Naming the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel the "John Conyers Tunnel" will only upset our Canadian neighbors across the river. The City Of Windsor they will probably file a lawsuit to sued the City Of Detroit over renaming the tunnel without their consent. If the City Of Detroit wants to name something in John Conyers honor, they should rename a public building used by the community. |

What a fitting and well deserved honor. Where would detroit be without the tireless work of such dedicated public servents. It takes courage to ignore your dwindling constituency while taking on high profile yet ultimately fruitless issues. Monica Conyers is obviously proud of her dad. What better way to pay tribute to him. |
