They're finally scrubbing the exterior of the old Federal Building (now the U.S. Courthouse) on Lafayette. The grime and soot are being removed and the section they've completed so far, facing Lafayette, looks like it did the day it opened in 1933. Parducci fans will be especially excited to see his work restored so beautifully.

The down side is now that the courthouse is looking shiney & new, it really dramatizes how awful the old Free Press building next door looks.

The old Detroit Federal Building is an interesting building. I also saw the building cleaning going on there on Monday, when I had dinner at the American Coney Island.

Apbest,

I hate to be a dick about this, but you have just asked if the Federal Courthouse was abondoned.

The ACLU lawsuit against the President is happening there:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireS tory?id=2067176

The Chris Webber/UofM case happened there:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports /basketball/nba/kings/2003-07- 14-webber-plea_x.htm

The Detroit "sleeper cell" terrorist case also happened there:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/58 80004/
----------------

Over the last few years, the Federal Courthouse in Detroit has been the battleground for numerous high-profile cases that have been front page news across the county.
----------------

Did you assume that the Federal Courthouse was abandoned because it is located in downtown Detroit?

You should visit Detroit. You will be surprised to find many buildings are actually occupied, even the Federal Courthouse.

Erikd, if you won't be a d*ck about it, I will. Apbest's (probably just carelessly written) post makes him sound like an architectural artifact thief who's hoping he had the good luck to find out that someone was restoring artwork on an abandoned building just so he can take it. If someone were to try doing that to that courthouse, his or her next architectural project would be studying the cinder blocks in a federal prison cell.
