I just saw a commercial for tonight’s Jeopardy that said there will be a category on Detroit. Sounds cool.

Well, I guess they (WDIV) are full of it. The city of the day was San Francisco. Sorry.

Maybe the commercial said something like "Watch Jeopardy tonight on Detroit's channel 4" and you just got confused.

It's okay; the same thing happens to me a lot.

I e-mailed WDIV and asked about their erroneous commercial. I received this response.

"Due to a schedule mix-up, the Jeopardy episode featuring the Detroit
category will now be shown on Thursday, June 15th on Local 4.

Thanks for writing and for watching Local 4."

I hope they include a simpsons reference.

Episode where moe and marge operate a buisness together
Marge: Moe taught me how to do the bum rush.
(Marge throws homer head first into a wall)
Homer: Ahh, Detroit style.

Homers lost brother episode
Homer: Tell me where my brother is Doc!
Dr. Hibbard: Well Homer, he could be anywhere, even Detroit.

Sprigfield elementary field trip to box making plant
Milhouse: Can we see some of the boxes?
Executive dude: Oh sorry children, we dont assemble them here, thats done in Flint, Michigan

Ahh how I love the simpsons. Those were off the top of my head so forgive me if i didnt quote them perfectly, are they any others that i cant think of right now?

As stated on the other thread, https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/5/74545.html?1150414459 , Alex accepted the wrong question with respect to the lakes answer: Detroit lies between St. Clair and Erie not Huron and Erie.

I missed the show, but the "Huron and Erie" answer is technically correct...

Lake St. Clair is not one of the Great Lakes, and technically speaking, it isn't even a lake.

Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River are both mislabeled. "Lake" St. Clair is actually a delta (not a lake), and the Detroit "River" is actually a strait (not a river).

Actually, I think the Detroit River is a river and not a strait. It's improperly labeled because Detroit means strait (or at least when it did when it was still a french term)...

Final Jeopary 2 part question::

What is the difference btwn and Strait and River?

Why is the Detroit "River" a Strait and not the St. Clair "River"?

PS, I honestly do not know the answers to these questions, not being sarcastic like usual...

Well, a strait can be a river, if I understand correctly (and obviously, vice-versa). I don't think the Detroit River is a strait because the Rouge River also drains into it. Therefore, it is not solely connected to two bodies of water.

Since the Detroit River doesn't exactly have a true source, I think that's what makes it a strait. Again I could be wrong but don't rivers need a source? I know for a fact that straits connect two bodies of water though, so....

Okay, let me make the disclaimer now, my college education was not in geography or natural sciences. I'm not an expert and could be wrong.

BUT, I would think that Lake St. Clair is the source of the river (and Erie its terminus). A river must flow downstream, and I'm pretty sure that the Detroit River only flows in one direction. It isn't a strait because it is also connected to the River Rouge, thus also, connected to the source of that river.

If straits could be connected to more than one source then every river in the world would also be a strait...

The Detroit River has a primary source (LSC). It also has some tributaries feeding it as well (notably the Rouge River and others on the east side and downriver). Rivers do not necessarily need only be fed by tributary rivers and creeks, lakes can also feed them.

Re straights, I may be mistaken, but straights connect two bodies of water. Strights do not necessarily have to have a current. Rivers flow. The Detroit River has a strong current (lake huron is at a higher elevation than Lake Erie thus the water in the Detroit river flooows).

If there is anyone who KNOWS otherwise please pipe in (I think someone on this forum studied forestry, they probably know for sure).

The Straits of Mackinac are true straits. The Detroit River is a river as far as I'm concerned as the flow is obvious. It is not obvious under Big Mac. I think that's the key.

Then again, what do I know? I'm a WSU product.

Back to the original question: is Lake St. Clair a lake (or a delta or a pond...)?

a lake is a natural body of inland water - a pond is a small lake

a stream is a linear body of water flowing on the Earth's surface - a river is a large stream

a channel is the linear deep part of a body of water through which the main volume of water flows and is frequently used as aroute for watercraft - a strait is a channel in a body of water that connects two larger bodies of water - rivers can have straits

a delta is a watery land mass formed at the mouth of a river by deposits of silt, sand, and rocks that were carried by the river

Lake St. Clair is a lake but is not by definition one of the five Great Lakes.

Jeopardy has a Detroit connection with Steve Dorfman, a former Detroiter who was head writer on Jeopardy from 1984 to 2004, when he died at the age of 48 from colon cancer. Steve won six daytime Emmy awards for his work on the show and wrote more than 50,000 Jeopardy answers.
