This was in Monday's Free Press, but I didn't see a thread on it. Dearborn's mayor was interviewed after becoming president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and I thought he had some good things to say about mass transit, immigration and regional cooperation.

It wouldn't take much to be better than Orville "Keep Dearborn 'Clean'" Hubbard. Now if only this post results in something real happening with regional cooperation in SE Michigan.

According to Guido, a transit stop will be coming to the Glass House soon:

"Q: How important is mass transit in reviving cities?

A: It's a big piece. In Dearborn, we have 300,000 people during the day to shop, work and visit, compared to 100,000 at night. How do you get people in and out? Everyone comes in a car. This is crazy. We sell cars for a living, and I know it's blasphemy to say this, but we need a good mass transit system in this region. We're way behind other regions. Name any vibrant metro area and they will have good mass transit."

quote:

"Q: What are some of the biggest challenges facing U.S. cities?

A: Everything that's on the front page. We're talking about immigration policy. We're talking about community development block grant funding. We're talking about transportation and telecommunications. There are a lot of quality-of-life issues. I always tell my staff: clean and safe, clean and safe. People want a clean city, and they want a safe city."

So true. So true. If those two things, and effective mass transit, fall into place, everything would greatly improve. Ahhh... Everything is so easy in theory.

Its time for Guido to GO. The only reason he has stayed so long is because his attempts to change the rules for his pension have not fully passed. But they will.
