Anyone remember anything about a restaurant that was pretty good in the late 60's and early 70's called Benno's (sp)? I seem to recall it was either on E. Grand Blvd or Indian Village area but time dulls the memory. thanks

Benno's was in the West Village neighborhood on Agnes between Parker and Van Dyke. It was certainly considered to be fine dining.

Thanks neilr, what ever happened to it? I remember one of the owners was named Ladarach. As a westsider, anything that wasn't just off East Jefferson was really out of bounds for us. I recall it was rather small and very upscale food.

Is this the same Benno that had a restaurant in Harmonie park and then in Royal Oak?

If it is, my mother was friends with this guy. He was a very interesting character.

Benno's was the site that became the Harlequin which was closed recently. It's vacant now.

Benno was a character. He took my sister in the kitchen one night and taught her how to make his signature dessert which he named for his mother, Souffle Sophie (I believe). His signature dinner was beef wellington.

I deliver Benno's mail in Royal Oak and he did have his restaurant in Royal Oak but it went belly up. It was pretty nice but a little too ambitious for the area.
He is an excentric character (some might say a "pain in the ass") who had an excellent culinary reputation. He was rumored to have had a Arab hotshot fly him overseas to make him meals.

Benno's was the former occupant of the space now occupied by the restaurant Courthouse Brasserie, near Harmonie Park.
