I found this story in the Free Press this morning. Looks like the Columbia might be going to New York again. It's a loss for Detroit, but hopefully she will be saved. Hopefully it just doesn't get moved to rot more. Here in the link http://www.sscolumbia.org/home .html

It looks like the Columbia is going to NY for good. At least it looks like she'll be in good hands. Folks around here don't seem to give a rip about her.

That's absolutely the case: NO ONE IN MICHIGAN WITH ANY MEANS GIVES A FUCK. NO ONE.

Outrageous.

Just curious, what benefit would anyone receive for donating way too much money to restore that boat. There are more important causes today that are not receiving funds.

What would the boat do, if it was restored?

Why is the boat historic anyways?

Sarcasm, right eric_c?

Private donors offering $100m+ for charter schools;
Private donors funding the riverwalk;
Private donors funding CM;
Private donors guaranteeing college educations for every qualifying graduate of Kalmazoo schools;
The list goes on.

...and that was my point, Dab. No one cares about the Columbia.

Merch - read the link and you'll find out what makes her 'historic'. For one, she's the oldest steam-powered passenger ship in the U.S.

Detroit makes, the world takes. Be proud that another great thing in Detroit is appreciated elsewhere. It previewed in Detroit, it was tested on a run to Bob-lo Island, and now it's playing in New York City. This brooks no demeaning.
Detroit, you didn't keep every Hudson and Packard you made, did cha? Show some pride, eh.

I miss understood. I read it as nobody in Michigan gives a fuck, not nobody in michigan gives a fuck about the columbia.

With that I don't disagree.

If someone gives money for the Columbia there is less money for something else. Homeless? Riverwalk?

What do you sacrifice?

Rehabbing the ship does nothing for Detroit or Michigan.

Compare what Kalamazoo has done to the restoration of the Columbia. See if New York would give every kid in the Hudson Valley a free college edukasion. Gimme a break.

It's sad, that we are losing the Boblo Boat Columbia, for good this time as it looks. Just taken a look at that website, it doesn't mention a thing about the boat's history serving on the Detroit River and the money to restore the ship from these so called private investors, is really coming from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. At least the St. Clare is still in good hands for the time being.

Yep, New York City will take the Columbia and make it her own. No question. I mean, who sees Jason Giambi in an Oakland A's uniform anymore? Still if their plan flies, it will be exciting to see the Columbia hit the big city. Even with the mammoth cruise liners that dock here, the Columbia will no doubt be one of the top boats in the waters here and that is something Detroiters, at least those who knew all along what a special boat she was, can be proud of.

Hopeful they pull the Columbia through recovery. Even with New York money involved, IMO they're still walking a tightrope.

At least we have the memories of the Boblo Midnight cruise. The dance floor would be sooo hot from the engine room and the people owuld be dancing all the way from the Island back to the Detroit dock

Speaking as one who knows and given the former ownership of the boat, it never stood a chance here.

Good luck in NY, I will visit when there......and hopefully she'll make it. That's gonna be a long tow.
