This was mentioned on channel 4 the other night. The Boblo boat Columbia has been sold to a firm in New York for six million dollars. The firm plans on using the boat for excursions in the New York area. Too bad the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy couldn't come up with the money to keep the Columbia here. An excursion along the Detroit River in the Columbia is preferable to one on the Detroit Princess. No offense to the Detroit Princess, simply there's more history with the Columbia than the Princess. The SS Columbia may be restored by a 501c3 New York organization. They have a website with few details. www.sscolumbia.org Having seen the great old ship last fall, I think the organization has a great goal, but an unrealistic view of what it wll take to restore the boat. I wish them well. river rat |

Hey, why don't the owners have the boats sail all the way to Cedar Point since Boblo is gone. We could use the new port authority dock in DD.313 |

Hey DD313, Cedar Point is a log way off! The Columbia was esigned by Frank Kirby, well known maritime engineer/designer who built fast ships, but the trip would take a full 7 hours at the Columbia's steaming speed. I'd go, but most people are in too much of a hurry for this kind of transportation. |

I am sorry to see the colombia leave Detroit- As the goals for Detroit seem to be dump it and tear it down- but I am glad to see some one saved the old girl- rather is trying to save the old girl- good luck! |

Didn't the St. Claire get purchased by a group in the Toledo area for refurbishing? I thought I read that on another thread somewhere. I worked on the boats one summer. What excellent vessels, I loved them. I miss them dearly. |

Someone else can make money off her, just not Detroit. I wish someone would send the Belle Isle Aquarium to New York where they appreciate architecture, breaks my heart to see it being allowed to waste away. Is the King's plan to let it fall so into disrepair that it is suddenly a "danger" to the public then the way is cleared to send in the bulldozers in the middle of the night? |
