I have read in local history books that 75 E. Boston Blvd. was John Dodge's residence. It is right behind Blessed Sacrement. As I understand, it is now the home of Cardinal Madia. Can anyone confirm this? Also what was the reason why the archdiocise sold the bishop's home in Palmer Woods other then the fact it was so large and inefficient? That home was bought by former Piston John Salley because he wanted the biggest house in the city and this was it. Now it is a private residence for pastor for another denonination. Here I digress...Any info on 75 East Boston Blvd. would be apprichiated.

That's my understanding. John Dodge lived there on East Boston. The Dodges planned a grand, new home on Lakeshore in Grosse Pointe. However he died before the house was completed and the new house stood unfinished for decades until it was finally torn down. Mrs. Matilda Dodge went on to build another grand house at Meadowbrook.

Mrs. Edsel (Eleanor Clay) Ford grew up on East Boston next to the Dodge House.

The East Boston / Arden Park Tour (2nd Annual) will be in a couple weeks. Last year's tour was a real treat in spite of the rain.

Neilr: Do you have the date of the East Boston/Arden Park tour? I attended last year's inaugural tour and, yes, in spite of the rain, it was definitely a treat!!!!

Kathleen, they have hung a banner on Woodward. I'm almost certain that it said the tour will be on Saturday, July 1. I'll try to drive out there tomorrow to double check.

Neilr, thanks form the info about Eleanor (Clay) Ford. Didn't know she grew up next to the Dodge House, but am not supprised. Also, was the property John owned in GP near where Horace's former home was at Dodge Place?

The E. Boston house next to John Dodge was owned by Joseph L. (J.L.) Hudson. Eleanor Clay was his niece; she and her family lived with Uncle Joe after her father died. Edsel Ford and Eleanor Clay were married there. This house was on the tour last year.

Thanks, Neil. I'll look for your posting with the date.

As for the Dodge's unfinished Grosse Pointe mansion, W. Hawkins Ferry's THE BUILDINGS OF DETROIT (1980 edition) shows a picture of the house on Plate 306, and mentions it to be in Grosse Pointe (City).

"The mansion was to contain 110 rooms and 24 baths. In the basement there was to be a ballroom and a swimming pool."

Them mansion sat unfinished for 20 years, until it was torn down in 1941, and the property subdivided.

Thanks, Neilr. I'm hoping to make it over there but my calendar for that day is already pretty crowded since it is essentially a holiday weekend!!

Did anyone make it to this year's East Boston-Arden Park Home Tour? What houses were on the tour?
