You should prove it was stolen and not obtained legally before you go publicly accusing anybody or blaming eBay.

"Some of us are behind you all the way (Burnsie)"

- liberty taken in a quote from the film "48 Hours"

Though the item could have been obtained legally, informing the seller that the item is technically "stolen" should convince the seller that the item should be taken off the list, held until all of the financing gets settled with the BC, then offered to the restoring team. If they say that they don't want it, then sell it!

I know, I'm dreaming again.

Moral obligation? What obligation do they have to give something away for free? It certainly would be a nice gesture, maybe they'd consider it if you call or write them. Or you could just buy the thing yourself and offer it to the developer.

I think that this will be the straw that breaks the camels back! The investors will not have enough money to buy back the crest and the whole deal will go south. Then the Book Cadillac will be torn down for sure. All over that little crest! lol

From http://www.forgottendetroit.co m/caddy/history.html :

quote:

... 15 months passed and still the hotel sat empty. Finally in 1986 the building was liquidated. Furniture, fixtures, china, silver service, it was all sold off. ...

If the ornament was acquired in this liquidation sale, then it looks like the seller is legit.

"informing the seller that the item is technically "stolen" should convince the seller that the item should be taken off the list"

Yes, lying to scare somebody so they do what you want IS the "moral" way to go about this. Indeed.

Moral outrage should be saved for the owners who abandoned the building and left it unsecured for YEARS- period.

Yes Dougw - Statler was also auctioned off for parts (ironically many items sold to the Book Caddy folks). Regardless - we should harass and intimidate this person - and also reprint his photos on a public forum WITHOUT PERMISSION - until he does what we want. Forum Terrorists.

Nice...

There is a vendor at the Hershey (PA) fall antique auto flea market (the worlds largest flea market, 8,700 spaces, 10'x 30', 3,500 vendors--takes days to see it all) from the Detroit area who sells mostly "trinkets" from the auto companies past--give away items with logos, crests, etc. They have been selling B/C doorknobs/escutchon plates for years. They are beautiful--but I save my meager play money for car parts.

I strongly suspect that the ornament was removed many years after the 1986 liquidation sale. Look closely at David Kohrman's pic from the late '90s
http://www.forgottendetroit.co m/caddy/32.htm
and you'll see identical crests on the elevator doors. The City of Detroit posted a guard inside the building until 1997. The ornament was likely removed after that time.

The COD guard probably sold them, or facilitated the removal/sale. $6.50/hr will do that

According to an addition to the auction info posted today:

"Q:Was this item stolen from the Book Cadillac?

Jun-22-06

A: For all those who are concerned that this was stolen or pillaged from the now empty Book Cadillac, it was NOT. We obtained it legally from the liquidation sale that the hotel had years back."

For what it's worth, I reported the item to ebay as potentially stolen. At least she'll have to present proof of legal ownership to ebay, I would think.

The item description is wrong, anyhow. It states categorically that the hotel is to be demolished. That makes selling off our history easier on the conscience of the buyer, neh?

Have you ever been to a hotel liquidation sale? They're nuts. They're usually conducted by a third party who the owner contracts with after taking everything they want out of the place, and they'll sell anything not nailed down.

Department store liquidations are worse - they ship in crap that couldn't sale anyplace else in the hopes that people will think it was merchandise from that store, and will buy it as a keepsake.

Who's to say there wasn't a box of those medallions sitting in the engineering shop that got put on a sale table?

Since the bookkeeping at those things is ephemeral at best, there's no real way to trace it back. That sale happened 20 years ago.

Let it go.

It is just amazing how many people get their panties in a twist about an emblem from a stripped hotel, but a guy gets his bikes stolen from his own garage and it is nothing but "tough shit" and derision for him.

wow dude - you are a psycho. You think anybody on eBay is required to prove that their items are not stolen, regardless of some keyed up would-be dogooders from an at-times overzelealous forum ?

well, time will tell. You zealots have about 2 days left to try to down this auction - good luck.

To quote Danny from the stolen bikes thread:

quote:

It's the Law of the Ghettos of Detroit. If you don't lock something up, it would be gone in 60 seconds. Don't bother calling the Detroit Police and file a report.

For those of you who feel the need to attack the antique dealer, and shut her auction down, please apply the same logic to this ornament.

Download the photo of the crest from ebay and print it on photo quality paper. Then tape it to the ceiling over your bed so you can see it every time you wake up in the morning. Finally, quit your pissing and moaning about a do-dad because this is a Capitalistic, democracy where everything is for sale. And, if you can hold it down for awhile George Bush is going to replicate this experiment in Iraq!

Turns out ebay requires a form filled out by a law enforcement officer before they will do anything... insuring that nothing will happen in this case.

I'm sorry the bikes got stolen. I'm sorry if this crest is stolen. Theft will just never be "okay" with me.

If anyone here is so fired up about getting the crest doo-dad back to whoever ends up developing the building, why dont you just buy the damn thing and donate it ?

Hmmm.. All hysteria aside, i contacted the seller and she can offer absolutely no documentation from the liquidation sale and no proof it actually comes from the building. (I know it probably did, however they should be able to substantiate it as "Authentic" if thats how they are selling it.) This would seem to indicate that they are a third party seller of the item - at best.

If I am not mistaken, this shop has had "Dave In Detroit" items in the past - right ? He was later proven to be a looter on television.

Get a grip and quit whining! Why don't you call the store and ASK! Why don't you call the cops and report it then? Why are YOU so worried about some trinket? If youa re worried, then buy the HOTEL and refurbish it....have you seen the pics from inside? NOTHING is left! I bought silverware, dishes, doorplates, doorknobs, room keys, and a bunch of other stuff at the sale 2 decades ago!! Should I go turn myself in to Kwame?? I think they even had the DOORS for sale! I don't have any paperwork as it was a cash and carry sale. Can you prove or assume I stole anything.......no.
You are quick to call someone a thief, don't think you have all the facts!
I'd call the police, have them investigate....then you'll see that you are a complete moron

How did you know I was an English major....now an English teacher? HAHA. This just enfuriates me that people have to be so crazed over something. The girl said she got it from the sale, I was there....I believe her, it was a madhouse. No receipts were given for anything and anything you cared to cart out was for sale. If it wasn't out on the tables or bins, you asked and they would go get it for you. I'd be willing to bet that since this has caused quite a stir, she'll put more on. It's fetching a nice price.

Pictures or text that you post must be your property. If you post pictures or quote text that are taken from a permitted outside source, they must be credited to their owners by name and link, if one exists. Items posted must be permitted for posting by their owners.

Some people have been stealing from that antique dealer. How about we call the cops on you? For shame For shame!! I do believe that you owe her an apology since you just illegally posted her address, ebay information, etc.
Or shall we contact Lowell?

Ah, well it's summer vacation time (maybe I just might go pilfer through old buildings to see what I can find and sell on Ebay) HAHA. I might just go sell my stuff to that antique dealer and see what creeps up. I thought Antique Dealers bought stuff from sales like liquidations, estates, etc? Good point? No? People should just stay out of other people's lives and stop harassing them. If someone is overly concerned, call the police. I am sure using up Detroit Police Dept resources to investigate a door plate is just so worth their time and effort!

Unbelievable! Now What exactly is the degree of difference between this stupid door knob and the two mountain bikes that were stolen from an unsecured garage last week? When the bikes were stolen it was the owners fault, not the thieves, because the garage wasn't secured by the owner...so too bad according to many posters to this site. I'm downtown all the time and the hotel is VERY accessible. Isn't this too the mayors fault for not "locking it up"? Why does everyone want to crucify someone over a doorknob but not for stealing two mountain bikes? Know also that many times items were removed and storerooms cleared before or after building are closed down..can you prove this was stolen as the owner of the bikes can can prove they were stolen?

Highly doubtful. The china, furniture and rugs were all sold off at the liquidation sale. However, as the sale was going on, folks started grabbing everything else that they could - prying light switch covers off, door plates and everything else with the B-C logo on it.

This line in the sellers ad, moreover, add credence to the possibility that it was stolen (emphasis is the seller's):

quote:

Needs a good cleaning, this item is AS IT WAS TAKEN OFF THE DOOR OF THE HOTEL.

Of course, since the statue of limitations has long since expired, chances of prosecuting her is extremely remote.

If people looked at that photo link from forgottendetroit that I posted, you'll see that at least some of the crests were on the elevator doors into the late '90s, and that they disappeared when the city removed its guard in 1997. I don't know why people are insistent that it had to be removed at the 1986 sale.

If everyone is so inisistent that it didn't come from the sale, then why don't you call the cops? Maybe it did come off a door, they had them for sale, too at the liquidation. Maybe they just wanted the crest and not the door? Doens't there need to be some sort of PROOF that she stole it before anyone is prosecuted?? You people are just a bunch of henchmen....have you ever done ANYTHING that might look suspicious but wasn't? She said where she got it, leave it at that.

I'm not suggesting anymore that we go after the auction seller. All I'm saying is that there's a good possibility that the crest was taken after the liquidation sale. We have PROOF that at least SOME of the crests were taken after the city removed the guard in 1997. Again, look at the photo and website I referenced. Nobody has come foreward with any PROOF that any crests were sold at the liquidation sale.

It sort of reminds me about the theories of the Edmund Fitzgerald's sinking cause. We don't have solid proof of any one cause, but we do have proof that the hatch covers were leaky even before the trip started. So the Coast Guard had to conclude that was the "most likely" cause of sinking.

The only people complaining are the ones who have no proof.....and it's just here on this forum. A few folks with their panties in a twist. I was at the liquidation sale. Like I said, if you wanted something, they would go get it for you....and they had bins upon bins of doorknobs and doo-dads such as the door plate, even the doors.

And just because the crest was on the elevator in those photos, doesn't mean that they didn't have them out someplace at the auction. Maybe they just couldn't get the ones off of the elevators to sell them. IF the antique dealer did go in and take them illegally, don't you think that perhaps they would have taken the elevator door doohickies too?

It's a crest for the BC Hotel on the elevator. I'm a girl, everything is a doodad or a doohickie or a thingamajig.

I'm sure that whomever rebuilds the Book-Caddy will be sure to track down ALL of the individuals who were at the liquidation sale & buy EVERYTHING back so the hotel will be as historically accurate as possible.........
