Wow! This will dramatically alter the job market in Michigan and the Detroit area. Anyone have any thoughts as to what these newly retired folks will do with their time? Become business owners? Go back to school? http://freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll /article?AID=2006606270305 |

You will actually see a boost in Michigan's economy because of all the buy outs. This will be similar to large bonus checks workers received during the good times. Michigan economy always received a short term boost during bonus check time. |

As an employee of an automotive supplier, I feel threatened by this sudden glut of available employees. In the past I have seen other companies more than willing to hire these "retirees" and displace current workers. Some of them are only in their early fifties and don't need health care from a new employer since they are covered by GM. Employers love to hear that an employee doesn't need health coverage. |

Never thought about that side of things Wash_man. That is very, very true. Employers looking for employees that don't need benefits is happening everywhere in all sectors. |

wash_man is correct. I've seen people retire from here. They retire on Friday and show up the following Monday working for a contract house. Same desk, same job, different employer. Retirement pay, retirement benefits, plus a contractors salary. |

It's common for Michigan's retired to move to better climes, especially during the colder months. Expect more of the same... |

These people are way too young to retire. I'll bet most of them will get new jobs, it's not like they can live the rest of their lives on a $70,000-$140,000 buyout. And let's face it, their pensions might not be there in 20 years, and even if it is, it might be slashed in half or they could lose their health care benefits. The smart ones will be finding another job and saving every cent for their true retirement years. |

It's time for the SMART public transit workers to take a buy out next August 8, 2006 because the state won't pay them and it is best to vote NO to get the mass transit leadership Michigan deserves by restoring all state transit funds and getting the industry supports we need for public mass transit. Dick DeVos' won't do this but you can by voting NO to defeat this regressive tax. |
